Cold and Sore Throat

Before we go over some quick fixes, first understand what are the most common symptoms. Your throat will become sensitive and itchy, your chest and nose will be congested, at times you will have a runny nose, persistent cough, mild fever, and headache. No matter how minimal these symptoms are, the ordeal sure is frustrating and tiring. Frankly speaking, there is no cure for common cold and that is why, we keep having them from time to time. But yes, there are some measures that we can take to treat and/or reduce the symptoms.

Over-The-Counter Medication
When it comes to over-the-counter medication for common cold, two names come to mind - Tylenol and NyQuil. Tylenol is effective against fever, headaches, and muscle ache during a common cold. As for NyQuil, it helps you sleep peacefully when you've got a bad cough and cold (taken right before going to bed). Apart from these medication, you can also try Advil, Sudafed, or Aleve. But before you take any of these medication, it is best you consult your doctor. Pregnant women, people with liver diseases, and issues with alcohol should be very careful when ingesting these medication.

Rest is Best
The secret to combat cold is to take plenty of rest. A resting body is more strong in fighting against the virus and infection. You will have enough energy to fend off the illness and regain the lost strength.

Drink Fluids
Drinking herbal teas, soups, and warm water is one of the best ways to get rid of a cold naturally. If you like chicken broth, you can drink a bowl of hot chicken broth as it helps in easing chest congestion. Also, drink fresh fruits juice (orange to be exact) and eight 8 ounces of water.

Steam
Take a nice, hot shower. The steam from the water will open up the congested nose and chest. It will help you relax and make you feel sleepy as well. As we already discussed, rest is very important when you have a cold. So take a hot bath to facilitate it. And if you can't sleep, just lie down in bed and read a book, magazine, or watch television. The point here is to rest and use as little energy as possible.

Eat Right
Eat the right foods. Stay away from junk foods, fried and spicy foods, and don't eat any sweets. I know that whenever someone says that you can't eat this or that, you want to go ahead and eat them even more. But this is only temporary. Once the symptoms are gone, you can resume your normal lifestyle. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, foods which are high in protein, and yes, chicken broth or soup.

These were some tips and suggestions on how to fight a cold properly. The only way you can help yourself rid of a cold is to fight it in the beginning stages. Don't wait for the cold to settle in with congested nose and chest, headaches, and muscle ache. You will initially feel the symptoms kicking in. This is your cue to do something upfront and avoiding the more severe symptoms later on.
