When you talk about the top 10 TV shows of the decade, we all will have our own choices. Some are biased towards drama, some towards comedy, some like horror/crime suspense and some are suckers for comedy. In these 10 years we witnessed some mind-blowing sitcoms from all genres of entertainment. However, I cannot name all of them, so here are some of my favorite sitcoms.
The Sopranos, HBO (1999-2007)
From the main focus on ducks in Tony Soprano's swimming pool to the much hyped ending. The Sopranos was one of the most watched TV series in the US. Creator David Chase, brilliantly captured the dark world of the underworld and its impact on the lives of people living in it and who are far from it. It was a major topic of discussion among office professionals and teens in college.
30 Rock, NBC (2006-Present)
A master piece comedy with a behind the scenes feel. One of the best comedy shows, 30 Rock makes you an addict before you know it. The awesome characters played by Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey are just comic geniuses.
Friends, NBC (1994-2004)
Probably the best TV show ever, everyone loved Friends, from youngsters till adults. The plot showed six friends struggling with life in the Big Apple, which mostly showed sleeping with each other and sipping lots of coffee. I think almost everyone in this world wanted to be a part of their group but Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Phoebe and Joey were just made for each other.
24, FOX (2001- 2010)
Creators Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow thought of this series when the idea of making a sitcom on the 9/11 attacks seemed impossible. They came up with the greatest agent Jack Bauer played by Kiefer Sutherland and some action and thrilled packed episodes. With appearances of some awesome guest stars, 24 was one of the best TV series ever.
Dexter, Showtime (2006-Present)
With Dexter, Showtime has actually given HBO tough competition. Dexter is a series about a serial killer who actually works for Miami Metro Police. The series has improved with every season with mind-blowing storyline and great performances by its actors. The audience just gets lost in the mind of Dexter and his evil dark soul who only kills serial killers. Michael C. Hall who plays Dexter, has received multiple awards and nominations for his performance as Dexter, his wife and in story sister Jennifer Carpenter also delivers a power packed performance making this series what it is; a spectacle.
Malcolm in the Middle, FOX (2000-2006)
One of the best TV series of the 2000's, this offbeat comedy was based on the situations faced by a middle class family of the US. Malcolm in the Middle was one of the most honest shows that depicted a middle class American lifestyle. The mother father both worked and kids managed the house. The show also dealt with some serious family issues but for the most part, comedy was their main thing.
Mad Men, AMC (2007- Present)
Matthew Weiner rewind the clock back almost 40 years to create a drama that provided a different look at relationships, businesses and gender through the eyes of the old and wise. One of the best TV shows of all time, Mad Men is set in the '60s' in a prominent ad firm starting with Jon Hamm who plays the main protagonist Don Draper.
Curb Your Enthusiasm, HBO (2000-Present)
Larry David is the man who created "Seinfeld". Now if this man creates something again it is bound to be something nice. Curb Your Enthusiasm is a series that made fun of politics and the creator. This show is plotted but not scripted, Curb Your Enthusiasm is one of the best TV series of the decade.
Two and a Half Men, CBS (2003-Present)
CBS has struck gold with Two and Half Men, hailed as one of the best TV shows of the decade. It provides half hour of comedy that is worth remembering. Great performances by Charlie Sheen as a smart playboy, Jon Cryer as his loser younger brother and Cryer's son played by Angus Jones who just loves to eat and crack stupid jokes. Two and a Half Men is just pretty much what you need to brighten your day.
Breaking Bad, AMC (2008-Present)
One of the top rated TV shows, Breaking Bad is just the best. It has gotten me hooked since the first time I saw it. When a high school chemistry starts selling drugs because he needs money for his cancer treatment. Things become rough and exciting, truly one of the best TV series. Period.
So according to me these were some of the best TV series of the decade. Some names which could not make it through this list are West Wing, The Wire, Family Guy, South Park and The Simpsons. I know I am missing a lot of names, but if I had to mention all of them this article would never end.
