Ingredients for Cake
  • 2½ cups cake flour (sieved)
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1½ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 2 ounces red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Ingredients for Cake Frosting
  • 16 ounces cream cheese
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 2½ cups sugar (powdered)
  • A pinch of salt
Directions

First of all, keep the cake pans ready (preferably two 9-inch pans) by buttering and then, flouring. Preheat oven to about 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Take two small mixing bowls; in the first, combine together red food coloring and cocoa powder and keep aside. In the second bowl, sift cake flour, salt and baking powder. In another large bowl, add butter and sugar and beat till the mixture turns fluffy.

To the butter mixture, stir in the eggs, vanilla extract and the food coloring mixture (one at a time). Then, add half the amounts of each of the flour mixture and buttermilk. Mix well and beat in the remaining flour mixture and buttermilk. In this flour mixture, add baking soda and vinegar and stir for a few minutes, until the mixture is blended well. Divide cake batter equally in the prepared cake pans and bake for approximately 25-30 minutes. Remove cakes and cool them in a wire rack.

For the cake frosting part, blend the ingredients - butter, cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract and salt in an electric mixer, till the mixture becomes light and fluffy. You can immediately use this cake frosting or refrigerate for further use. Now, place an already cooled cake layer in a platter and coat it with cream frosting. Spread a thick layer of frosting over the first layer and place the second layer on top of it. Cover the top of the second cake layer and sides with the remaining cake frosting and serve.

  • 3 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1½ cup sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 2 bottles red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Grease and flour two 9 inch cake pans. Preheat oven to about 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Take a mixing bowl and beat together eggs, sugar and shortening, until it becomes light and fluffy. Then, in another bowl, make a paste out of cocoa and food coloring. Add this cocoa paste to the bowl of shortening mixture.

Take two large bowls; combine buttermilk and vanilla in the first bowl, and flour and salt in the second bowl. Add flour mixture and buttermilk mixture alternately to the shortening. In a small cup, combine vinegar and baking soda. Add this vinegar solution to the cake batter. Mix well until the batter is soft and smooth.
