If you just happened to construct a new room in your home and have finished working with the flooring and framing up job, then I am assuming the ceiling and the walls are the only aspects which are left as an unfinished business. This in short means, you have to install drywall in the interiors of your home. Well, that's the inside story. For hanging Sheetrock on the exterior walls, you first have to insulate them. Hanging it is indeed a tedious job and also a job of two people to hold the sheet and hang it on the ceiling or walls. So, if you decide to this job on your own, you need some simple instructions and techniques to go about. And what could be better than this article over here!

Steps to Take Before Hanging Sheetrock
  • First step is to decide the size of the sheet you are planning to add to your room. The cost of per sheet is about $9. So, if you have a large room, the figure is going to multiply.
  • Secondly, decide which type of Sheetrock you want to hang, as in, decide the thickness and the size factor. If you want the sheet for the ceiling, go for a thin one as it is easy to handle and install. If you want to install the sheet for an entertainment room with music systems and stuff like that, perhaps thickness of the sheet would matter here.
  • Next step, and a very important one, is to finish insulating the wiring of the wall joists and plumbing work completely. This is just to avoid tearing down of the Sheetrock right after you install it.
  • Another point to note is to check if the Sheetrock that is hung falls at a proper distance from the edge of the stud, probably (halfway). This action is taken, because when you drill holes nearing the edge, the chances are high that you might hit the electrical wires or plumbing pipes in the walls.
All of these aspects are very important before you begin the process of hanging Sheetrock. Sheetrock originally the brand name for gypsum, is a product produced by U.S. Gypsum Company. Under the chapter of home construction, Sheetrock are available in two basic types; one greenboard and the other standard drywall. The typical way of hanging Sheetrock is vertically - 8 foot and horizontally - 4 foot.

Hanging Sheetrock on Ceiling

Materials Needed
  • Utility knife (extra blades)
  • A jigsaw
  • Tape measure
  • Carpenter's pencil
  • Drill (drill bits and screwdriver bits)
  • T-square
  • New piece of hanging Sheetrock
  • Sheetrock screws
  • Sheetrock lift
Procedure

Before hanging the Sheetrock on the ceiling, you will have to measure the exact size of the ceiling using a tape measure and then cut the Sheetrock accordingly prior to installation. If there are any light fixtures, you will have to cut the sheet accordingly. Keeping the measurements at hand, drill a hole on one side of the sheet opening. The hole should be slightly larger than the normal width of the jigsaw blade. Once the sheet is cut with the jigsaw blade next step is to move on to determine the location where the wall studs would be placed. Mark those points on the drywall and use a T-square to draw lines on the walls sticking to the same measurements. Now get hold of the Sheetrock and place it on the Sheetrock lift. Run it in the upward position to fix it to the ceiling joists. Drill the screws inside using the screwdriver bit and begin to drill at the center first and then spread out evenly towards the edges of the Sheetrock.

For people who are used to such home improvement jobs on regular basis, really have no issues in dealing with tough tasks like hanging Sheetrock! All you need is a bit of patience and focus to get any job done right!
