Explanation of an Assault Rifle

One of the definitions of an assault rifle is - "A standard military rifle, capable of controlled, fully-automatic fire from the shoulder, with an effective range of at least 300 meters". Another explanation of this firearm is something like a selective fire rifle with a cartridge which is intermediate and a magazine which is detachable. These are categorized as standard infantry weapons in modern warfare and armies. Within the category there are a couple of divisions - light machine guns and submachine guns. The former is used for sustained automatic fire, in a light support role. The latter fires a pistol cartridge.
