Anime is the nick name for Japanese animation. It is a distinct style of animation that the Japanese invented which involves heavy martial arts. Katakana is the Japanese name given to the traditional animation or western animation in Japan. Anime is particularly popular in eastern countries. Only recently anime has become popular in the USA and other western countries.

A Few of the Best Anime Series

Dragon Ball Z: This series deals with the legendary hero Goku, who has to find the seven mystical dragon balls which are capable of summoning the great dragon. The great dragon grants any wish to the one who gathers the balls. Along the way he meets his future wife Bulma and many other friends. He has to fight many villains, gain a lot of skill and compete in privately organized combat tournaments. Goku is trained by a legendary martial arts master who also adopts him as his grandson. Goku's son Gohan is his future successor.

Code Geass: In the world of Code Geass, Japan is a colony of Holy Britannian Empire. It has been invaded for the purpose of controlling its mineral resources. Japan has the largest deposits of mineral sakuradite. It is a very high energy yielding mineral and Japan has 70 percent of the world's deposits. The world of Code Geass has three superpowers. The Holy Britannian empire and the Chinese Federation are imperial monarchies but the United Federation of Nations, which is the successor of Eurozone, is a democracy. In Code Geass, there are immortals who are capable of bestowing destructive powers to other humans. Eventually the receiver of these powers will also become immortal. Code Geass has received an award for the best anime series (short) at American Anime Awards.

Full Metal Alchemist: Edward and Alphonse Elric are two gifted brothers capable of performing alchemy. Alchemy in the series, is fully a developed science (with an element of magic) and governed by distinct laws (transmutation, transfiguration and equivalent exchange). These laws cannot be broken under any circumstances. It is believed that a mysterious philosopher's stone is capable of granting the possessor with unlimited power. Philosopher's stone may also be able to break the rules of alchemy. The brothers have lost their mother to a terminal illness. Their quest is to find this philosopher's stone and bring their mother back to life. Full metal alchemist received an award for best anime series (long) at the American Anime Awards.

InuYasha: Set in medieval Japan, the country is full of mysterious creatures and demons. Demonic beings outnumber human beings. There are good as well as bad demons. The Jewel of Four Souls is said to be the most powerful entity in the world. The mystical powers of this jewel grants infinite power to its master. If evil comes into possession of the Sacred Jewel, then its power is tainted by the demonic aura. However the sacred priestess (responsible for the safety of the pearl), is capable of purifying its aura, if tainted. Naraku, a collective half demon, sets his evil sight on the sacred pearl. Kikiyo, the sacred priestess, is killed by Naraku through deceit. Inuyasha, son of a great dog demon, is half human and through the power of the jewel, wishes to become a full blooded demon. His older brother Sesshomaru, (as both his parents are demons) is a full demon with a complete demonic aura. Though Inuyasha is powerful, he is no match to Sesshomaru who believes that the only way of survival is through combat. Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikiyo in modern day Japan who travels back in time, to recollect all the shards of the Sacred Jewel of Four Souls.

Ghost in The Shell: This is a futuristic series and the main antagonist in the series is Motogo Kasunagi. She is generally referred to as 'Major' in the series. Having a bionic cyborg body, she is able to perform great feats during combat. Almost every one in her team is a cyborg. Her team, known as 'Section 9', is an expert in covert operations. In the series, section 9 faces internal as well as external conflict. Its movie version was considered as one of the best anime movies of all time.

Avatar The last air bender: Although this series is written, directed and produced by Americans, it has been dubbed as an anime. In the series, Avatar is a 12 year old kid who is accidentally trapped in an iceberg. To stay alive Avatar is forced to meditate and his spiritual energy keeps him alive. Avatar is finally freed after almost a 100 years. He is still the 12 year old kid (physically and mentally) but his actual age may be calculated as 112. In the world of Avatar, there are four kinds of bending powers (Air, Water, Earth and Fire). Air benders can bend the air to their will and are spiritual people. Water benders, bend water as they wish and live only in the north and south poles. Earth Benders are very hard-headed people and have a craft of bending the Earth. Fire benders control fire and have a desire to conquer the world. Avatar is the only person in the world who can bend all four elements. He is in charge of keeping balance in the world.
