Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. ~ Joseph Addison

I am sure you all must have heard these quotes. It's a general thing that most of us love reading. May be not books always, but say E-books, magazines, newspapers, novels, etc.; people have their own interests and choices. Reading is a great hobby, which makes you discover yourself and your capabilities as well. Reading is excellent for one and all. Right from babies to toddlers to teens to adults; it's always going to be good. As it is said, reading gives time for "yourself"...rightly so! And think about the benefits of reading books and the list goes on and on...
  • It's obvious that the first thing that comes to our mind is getting knowledge. Reading books on varied subjects imparts information and increases the depth about the subject as well. It also helps expand our horizons and makes us aware about the facts and figures of the outside world.
  • Reading is best for increasing our thinking ability. It contributes in making us more smart and increases our vocabulary and writing skills as well. Obviously, it's during reading that we come across many new words which increase our knowledge strength. It's almost like our brain is working out!
  • Reading is a big stress reliever. Books on how to cope up with depressions and tensions or something like positive thoughts or deeds gives us a sigh of relief and boosts our self-confidence.
  • Reading also improves our power of imagination since it takes us to another world. This usually happens while reading fiction books.
  • It's very common that while studying any particular course, books help deeper and better understanding than just verbal explanations. Books are of course foolproof and I am sure you can achieve excellence in your academics, if you read often.
  • Reading not only increases our vocab but also our concentration and focus. Biographies, fiction books, non-fiction books makes us engrossed in their write ups and help our mind to be calmer than before. It also makes our memory cells work like never before as it is said that, "It is better to use memory than lose memory". If you want some ideas to build in readiness in your kids you can go through some of the reading readiness activities.
  • Reading makes us more creative and increases our creativity skills.
  • Books are extremely handy. It's almost like we are carrying knowledge with ourselves. They are cheaper as well in comparison to the information they provide. I am sure you will agree on this one that it's a cheap entertainment source. Also, comic books generally make us happy and are best in entertainment.
  • Boredom often irritates us. Watching T.V., listening to music are not always the things to be done to overcome it. Reading a book instead, will make you feel better and it's always a thoughtful thing to indulge into.
  • By saying that it increases our stalk of information, means that it astonishes us as well. It often happens that we are positively shocked by reading some facts or stories.
  • Reading builds self-esteem within us by making us more of an expert on any particular topic. We can relate it to our increased self-confidence.
  • Also, we can always share whatever we have read with our friends, colleagues, family as we all know that knowledge increases by sharing.
  • It's often that books change lives of people. Some books are really inspiring, may be based on real life experiences or true stories. Some people might get inspired by reading biographies or autobiographies. You could better explain it as "This book changed my life".
  • Also there is this new trend of making movies based on books. But I am sure you all agree that we end up saying that the book was 1000 times better than the movie!
As I mentioned before, reading is beneficial to one and all. And it is good if children make reading as their hobby apart from playing, of course! As it is said that it's always easy to mold your child into any form when s/he is young; if reading is it, then best! One would have the impression, how are babies supposed to benefit from reading, but they do! We all know about the lullabies. Babies love them, don't they? They respond wonderfully well to books depicting colorful pictures or different rhythms. They love the sound effects they hear. We might never realize, but they are actually into a learning process. Books with colorful pictures or books on their favorite cartoon characters excites this age group. They love colors, alphabets and numbers. Nursery rhymes or small story books make them very happy. They are learning and enjoying it as well!

Since preschoolers have an understanding of alphabets and words, reading books involving slight complex texts is what they like. They love reading books on animals, fairies or cartoons. As parents, you can also make them read some educational books which will widen their knowledge aspects.

All the teenagers are into schooling and have the passion of seeking more knowledge which obviously comes from books. They also develop their own interest for a particular type of writing styles or stories. Fiction and nonfiction is something which fascinates them a lot. They have their own favorite authors. If you develop a particular taste of books for yourself as a teen, it will forever remain within you!
