Introduction
To begin with, one needs to possess some basic knowledge about the Internet which is an unending ocean of information that has gained a lot of popularity over the years. The Internet is just a worldwide system of computers that can exchange information between various users. It is not the end of the world if a person does not understand the working and the uses of the Internet at once as the Internet is a perfect illustration of ‘Practice makes a man perfect’.

The working of the Internet
The Internet is accessible by computers that have exceptional IP addresses. No two computers share the same IP address. The IP address comprises of four numerals that are separated by dots or simply put full stops. The IP address is the same as a person’s postal address. Human users have also been facilitated by the introduction of domain names. Domain names are the alphabetical manifestation of the numerical IP address by a DNS (Domain Name Server).

Transfer of information
The information is transformed into minute packets and is transmitted from computer to another. This function is performed by a machine called stack. The Internet also offers facilities such as E-mail packets, web browsers and also news readers. There is no other feeling that gives immense satisfaction than a prolonged and lively chat with a close friend or a beloved. For the appeasement of this requirement, the Internet also offers amenities such as IRC programs. All these software use numerous methods to encode and decipher the information passed between computers.

Servers
Servers are just machines that perform a specified role in the Internet and their presence is very essential for the successful operation of the Internet. They provide access to the infinite files available in the Internet called websites. The servers send requests to the various websites that make up a website. The website to which the request is sent sends the concerned webpage from its numerous web pages. Mail servers are servers designed to decipher and modulate the packages utilized by the e-mail. It is the source from where a person’s mail can be downloaded.

Features
The Internet offers a wide range of services such as downloads and uploading. One of the most popular features of the Internet is downloading. Downloading is the process by which information such as songs, games, wallpapers and screensavers are saved in a person’s computer from a website. Uploading is just the vice-versa of down loading as the name suggests. It is the process of sending information from a distant computer to any website. The processes of uploading and downloading have in general benefited many people such as freelancers.

Modem
Modem is simply the acronym for Modulator/Demodulator. It is one of the most important components required for a person to access the Internet. It is a simple device that needs to be connected to a telephone for its functioning. The modem converts the electrical signals to analog signals (modulation) and vice-versa (demodulation). This conversion is essential as telephones cannot understand electrical signals and the computers cannot decipher analog signals.

Conclusion
The Internet is one of the numerous inventions of mankind which has gained importance due to its numerous benefits. The Internet is a wide network of computers which offer information from remote computers and also helps us to connect and improve our contacts with people all over the world. Recently, websites even for matrimonial purposes have been launched. There are also chatting websites such as Orkut so that people can meet more people online.
