Before We Say Goodbye - Chapter Two
From the author of "Duality of Alexa" & "Unrequited Hate". Chloe moves forward. How do you say "Goodbye" to the one who stole your heart?
Chapter Two.
"When are you going to learn?". Her cousin chided over the phone.
Chloe moaned, "I know... I mean, I don't know!"
"I've got to take you out. You've been locking yourself up in that cube of yours."
"But-"
"No buts! We're going out tonight. Get ready!"
"But Adrienne!"
"Get ready! I'll be there in twenty minutes!"
And with that said, Chloe's cousin, Adrienne hung up on her.
There was no stopping that stubborn cousin of hers once her mind set its course. Evan was definitely a good match for her. Chloe smiled as she recalled their wedding reception about three months ago. It was a beautiful evening. The motif was Tiffany blue and brown; it never gets old.
Chloe chuckled at the recollection of her standing among the other ladies waiting for the bouquet to be tossed. It landed in her crossed arms, but she made no move to grab it. Instead, Lisa the over-bubbly-someone-needs-to-burst-her-bubble cousin, jumped at it.
Ding-dong.
Chloe was shaken out of her amusement as she went to answer the door.
"Hey-" she began, thinking it was Adrienne.
Instead, those familiar eyes locked with hers once more. Her brows knit and he broke the slightly awkward silence.
"Hi Chloe. I went by your old house and your dad said you moved here. Here," he held out her textbook. "I think you might need this."
"Thanks, Sam. I really do need this. Sorry for the trouble."
"No, I'm sorry. For you know, walking away with it. I don't even remember how that happened."
She gave a nervous laugh because she remembered it, "It's alright. Uh.. Did you want to come in?"
Giving an apologetic smile, "Naw, I've got to get going. Thanks though."
"Alright, take care then. And thanks for bringing this all the way here."
Closing the door, she wished she didn't have to see him anymore. When was Sam going to leave for good, again? Silently, she asked all the stars to arrange themselves so that their paths never meet. She always managed to feel and look like a moron when he walked away. One day she'd love to gracefully exit out on him.
This was never to be borne, of course.
Anyway, ten minutes later, Chloe's ride came and they were on their way.
Adrienne treated Chloe and a few others out for some dinner and then for a drink at the nearest lounge. This place was one of the bars that they frequented, so the bartender knew each and every one of them by name.
"Chloe," he teased as he mixed her a cocktail. "How have you been? I haven't seen you in a while."
She teased back, "Miss me much?"
"Of course," he winked and handed her the drink.
"Oh stop it," she scolded him. "You wink like that to everyone who gives you the time of day."
"I do not," he scoffed, excusing himself to serve waiting customers.
Turning around in her bar-stool with her martini in hand, Chloe takes a sip and watches on as Adrienne and the others steal the show on the dance floor. Taking another sip, she tosses a look over her shoulder to peek at the other end of the bar. To her surprise, she finds Markus in a deep conversation with one of the new patrons. Chloe wondered what it was he was discussing with the man in a business suit.
Before Markus or the patron could find her staring at them, Chloe whipped her face in the direction of her friends who were coming to the bar for another drink.
"Chloe! Why aren't you dancing?! Come on, you love these songs!"
She gave an apologetic smile, "Sorry... I was distracted."
Her friends wiggled their eyebrows at her.
"By whom?" Adrienne asked.
With a flippant, "It doesn't matter." She led the way to the dance floor and danced her incoherent thoughts away.
