Bedbug Protection for Travellers

Nothing can ruin a vacation faster than being bitten by bedbugs in your hotel. What can you do to mitigate the chances of bedbug bites.
How does one protect themselves from bedbugs while traveling ? Inspection of the mattress and area around the bed you are about to lay your head, is not always foolproof. Even though you take precautions, sometimes it’s just not enough and a hotel stay can easily be ruined by being bitten by bedbugs.

Price is no guarantee that your hotel will be bedbug free. Some of the best hotels are affected by bedbug infestations at one time or another. Bedbugs do not denote unclean conditions. Any hotel can suffer the scourge of bedbugs because they are such good travelers, hitching a ride in unknowing tourists luggage, from one hotel to another, or from a home to a hotel. It doesn’t take much.just a couple of bedbugs are all that’s needed to start an infestation.

You can’t very well check in to your room and start applying insecticides, nor do you want to become completely paranoid about bedbugs, but they are a major problem in the hospitality industry. A quick check of travel sites and hotel rating sites can make even a seasoned traveler wince.

Besides inspection and vigilance, a good quality travel sheet is the best defense against bedbug bites. Obviously which ever travel sheet you choose, it must be closed on all sides allowing only the top portion to remain open. Some travel sheets are permanently sewn on 3 sides making entry and exit a real problem for anyone. Look for a brand which is zippered, as opposed to buttons or velcro. A good quality nylon coil zipper will give the best protection and be most comfortable.

The material must be washable in hot water, above 60 celsius / 130 f and able to be dried on a hot cycle in your household dryer. Hot water and hot air is the only reliable way to kill bedbugs and their eggs, so if you can’t wash and dry your travel sheet in hot water and hot air, you may be transporting bedbugs to you home or next hotel.

Using a travel sheet is no guarantee you won’t be bitten but it does add a good measure of protection and peace of mind.
