Beauty in the Dark...
This occurred to me when I was asked why I wear my sunglasses so much when I walk around post in the day...
The metal on my bare back is cold,
Yet I continue to lay out here.
If others would see me,
Would they honestly care?
The people in today’s world,
Worry about their own care.
Hurrying themselves to their own demise,
Yet here I am on the outside among the night air.
The stars look beautiful tonight,
Broken by the occasional twinkling of a satellite.
Though they are up by the clouds,
I know that we are all alright.
For even in the middle of all the bustle,
We each find our own solitude.
Even if some of us go to more extremes,
We still somehow find a place outside the loop.
From up here the world looks different,
As I hear rocks shift somewhere beneath me.
For from up here one can observe,
While others pass way below me.
The night air is cool,
Making it one of my favorite times of day.
For when others are awake,
They generate the heat that makes up the day.
The night is my place of solace,
For all things appear the same.
The ones who walk in the light of day,
Underneath the light of stars, complain.
They fail to see the beauty here,
Every little sound that goes unnoticed.
The sound of the door brings me out of my reverie,
Always among the loud they are.
They grumble about the lack of light,
But that is how things are in the night.
Here among those who thrive,
We have our own drives.
For our drives are driven by who we are,
For it is harder to see who the other is.
Unless the light of the moon alights,
You are free to roam in the night.
Here they can no longer see me,
No longer see the empty smile that stretches me.
But the light expects me to smile,
To hide the pain that’s still reminding me.
Reminding me who I am,
Why I prefer to walk the night.
Reminding me who I am,
Why I question who is right.
Was she right in leaving,
Were they right for blaming?
Was I right in not weeping,
Were they right in framing?
In the night I review the day,
Come to terms with the decisions I made on the way.
Remember the lessons I learned,
And remember the thoughts to which I yearn.
For it is here in the night,
That you find your true being.
Here among the stars of the night,
You find the beauty that you were hiding.
Yet I continue to lay out here.
If others would see me,
Would they honestly care?
