Basic Requirements to Become a Teacher
You might be thinking of becoming a teacher or you might want to know what makes a good teacher. But what is required to become a teacher? What makes an ideal one? Find out as you go through the basic requirements to become a teacher.
Basic Requirements to Become a Teacher
A bachelor's degree in the field of teaching or a certification in education or the subject matter is the basic educational requirement for being a teacher. Different states of the United States of America follow different methods of certification. The eligibility criteria for becoming a teacher differ across the different states of America. Most of the states require advanced training of some kind in order to become a teacher. Most of the jobs in colleges are held up by teachers possessing a master’s degree in their subject coupled with some years of experience in their field. As far as the educational qualification of a teacher is concerned, he/she needs to possess a degree in the concerned field from a reputed institute and more importantly, should have a thorough knowledge of his/her subject.
The duties that a teacher has to perform vary across different regions of the United States and also according to the grade of the students being taught. The elementary, secondary and middle school students need to be trained in the basic skills such as language, math and the elementary sciences. During the initial years of education, one learns how to learn and hence it becomes important for the teachers to develop good study habits in the kids in these grades. It is the teachers' duty to maintain a healthy learning atmosphere for the children. During the early years of formal education, kids tend to follow their teachers; their teachers are their mentors, their idols and their guides in their process of learning. So it becomes the responsibility of the teachers to set ideals before the children and inculcate in them the basic good habits and qualities. It becomes the teachers' responsibility to cultivate good virtues in their students. I remember my school years, when we had a counselor; a teacher specialized in dealing with child psychology. We could take all our doubts and questions to her. A wonderful teacher she was!
The teachers working in degree courses and post-secondary schools need to focus on specific skills of their students. With the passing years, fields of study start getting specialized. The education during these years is more of a specific nature as against its generic nature during the early years of formal education. The teachers in specialized fields are responsible for rendering the skills specific to their field to the students. But these years of one's education constitute adolescence. These are one's growing years and are hence accompanied by new concerns and questions. It is during this stage of life that an individual steps into adulthood to become a professional and thus, these years of one's life are full of experimentation and exploration of the 'new'. Teachers can play an instrumental role during the post-secondary years of a children's education, by being their friends, by reaching out to them and their problems and inviting them to share their ideas. I would like to make a mention of my college years when we were facilitated with a mentor, a teacher with whom we could discuss our problems regarding our life in college.
I think teachers play a vital role in every student’s life. They walk you through your years of education and prepare you to start a meaningful and successful life. Do you meet the requirements to become a teacher? Think.
