Basement Waterproofing for the Do-it-Yourselfer

The supplies you’ll need include cleaning supplies, wire brushes, some quick-dry cement, and a sealant. You’ll be able to find all these supplies at the hardware or home improvement store. Usually the items are sold separately, but you might be able to find a kit which will supply everything you need in one handy box.

Before starting to waterproof, you need to remove any dirt and debris from the areas that will be treated. Use your wire brushes for this task. After the walls are clean, apply the cement to any large holes and cracks. Once that has dried and hardened as per the instructions on the package, you’ll apply your sealer.

In very wet areas it’s possible you want to add a second and third coat of sealant in order to get the level of protection you need. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the sealant very carefully so that you know the correct way to apply it. Too many do-it-yourselfers fail to use the proper application methods which results in even more problems.

If you’ve discovered a leak in your basement, you’ll want to take care of it right away. Keep in mind, though, that if there’s a crack you can see, then there are probably many more which won’t be visible for weeks or even months. By that time, your basement may have suffered thousands of dollars in damages, and it will probably be beyond your talents to make the repairs yourself.
