Dehumidifier as the name suggests, is a household device to decrease the level of moisture in air, primarily for health reasons as humid air can cause mildew and mold inside the homes. High humidity levels can also cause problems for people in the house. Without dehumidifiers the use of certain areas of the house would be impossible. Dehumidifiers can be of various types:

• Mechanical or Refrigerative.
• Desiccant
• Air conditioners.

The most common type of a dehumidifier would be a mechanical or refrigerative dehumidifier which usually functions as it absorbs the moist air over a refrigerated coil with a small fan. As and how the saturation vapor pressure of water goes down with falling temperature, the water in the air condenses and collects in a bucket. Air is then heated by the warmer section of the refrigerative coil. The effectiveness of this method is more if it works at a higher outside temperature and usefulness decreases considerably when the temperature goes down. Desiccant dehumidifiers use desiccant material to dehumidify. Unlike mechanical or refrigerative dehumidifiers, desiccant dehumidifiers work at low temperature and low relative humidity levels. Desiccant materials are highly reactive with water vapor, therefore the desiccant material is exposed to the high relative humidity air stream so that it attracts and retains some water vapor. When the desiccant has absorbed the moisture from the air it is exposed to the low relative humidity air stream, which in turn absorbs the moisture back from the desiccant, leaving it, dry to absorb moisture again.

So the first air stream is the one from which moisture of humidity is being absorbed and the second air stream is the one that is used to regenerate the desiccant material so that it can begin another cycle of absorbing moisture or dehumidifying.

Air conditioners also act as dehumidifiers as they help in decreasing the temperature as a result of which the moisture is condensed and liquefies to water. Now the issue is to handler the accumulated water. With technology up gradation the manufacturers have facilitated their air conditioning devices to be equipped with condensing coil and fans to help in the evaporation of accumulated water into the outdoor atmosphere or older units have the facility wherein water just drips outside. In case of central air conditioning there are arrangements made so that the water can be drained out.

Most of the dehumidifiers have a control device that is called a "humidistat". This device helps in detecting moisture and automatically the dehumidifier is switched on and off depending on the moisture content of the ambient air. It operates continuously if you set it at maximum.

Basements dehumidifiers are important for those homes where the basement used even if that means storage. If you want the stored things to remain in the same condition as they are now, it is important that you keep the place moisture free. It is also essential in house where there is a person who is allergy prone or allergic. Basement is the lowest portion of the house in fact it is below ground level and I sin contact with the moisture of the earth constantly. Purchasing a dehumidifier is not a complicated thing since all the dehumidifiers work in the same way. While buying the size has to be considered and whether you want a portable dehumidifier or an installed unit. Size matters since you would not the dehumidifier to take up all the valuable space of your basement. Also keep in mind that these devices need maintenance therefore empty the water collector after regular intervals otherwise these are simple devices that would take much of your time.
