Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery

Information about bariatric surgery for weight loss, gastric bypass and Lap Band.
Today there is an increasing number of morbidly obese people who opt out for Bariatric-weight-loss-surgery, as a sure fire way of losing and eventually maintaining their weight.

The phrase Bariatric-weight-loss-surgery comes from the Greek words meaning weight and treatment. Patients who are considered for the surgery are usually those who have a Body Mass Index of 40 or more. Counseling before the surgery ensures that the patient understand the implications of the surgery and the after effects.

Bariatric-weight-loss-surgery is a generic name for many of these gastrointestinal surgical procedures. One of the common methods is to close up most of the stomach, to reduce the amount of food a person consumes. This is known as the gastric bypass or even stomach stapling. Another procedure is to reorganize the small intestine; to decreases the calorie absorption of the body. Sometimes a combination of both are done, this of course depends on the needs and metabolism of the person.

With modern technology, Bariatric-weight-loss-surgery is now becoming increasingly non-invasive. One of the most common ways nowadays of reducing the size of the stomach and reorganizing the small intestine is Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass. A more advanced version of this surgery is the “Roux en-Y” procedure. This offers faster recovery time, better cosmetic benefits and much better results. There are three major steps to the surgery –
  1. The stomach is divided or partitioned into two parts, this is upper small pouch, and lower, but large pouch
  2. The Y – connection made in the small bowel creating a new end that is attached to the stomach.
  3. Finally, the small bowel end bypasses the stomach, as it is connected to upper stomach pouch.
The most recent advance in Bariatric-weight-loss-surgery is the Laparoscopic Adjustable Silicone Gastric Band or LapBand. This has been proven to be more effective for morbidly obese patients and without any significant scaring. The recovery period is a little bit more, though the success rate is much higher.

There are some side effects to the Bariatric-weight-loss-surgery. In the case of gastric bypass surgery, some patients have reported bleeding and infection. Also because of the sudden weight loss, the patient could also suffer from gallstones, gastritis, mineral and vitamin deficiencies. As the stomach is now considerably smaller, eating more than the newly created pouch can hold can cause vomiting. The patient could also experience dizziness, and diarrhea.

Recovery from a Bariatric-weight-loss-surgery would take a few days stay in hospital. Before leaving the hospital the patient should be able to move easily, eat liquid or pureed food without having the urge of vomit and be comfortable without pain medication. A similar diet would have to be followed for a few days after the operation. Soon enough the patient will be eating small quantities of solid food. In many cases, a visit to a dietician and nutritional supplements will be recommended. Among other things it is advised that the patient restricts alcohol, and avoids sugar, deep-fried and rich foods, as the stomach cannot handle it anymore.

The Bariatric-weight-loss-surgery helps in the management of varied other diseases related to morbid obesity. These include Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, cholesterol, Sleep Apnea, hyperacidity, and more. It must be combined with a lifetime of better diet management and exercise.

Before opting out for Bariatric-weight-loss-surgery, the patient should speak to the doctors concerned and meet as many patients as possible. This would give an idea of what to expect and prepare for the surgery. The surgery would cost about $25,000 and some insurance companies do cover it, as it is seen to offer extensive medical advantages. After the surgery, further counseling may help in creating more positive behavioral pattern, to ensure a lifetime of weight loss.

The Bariatric-weight-loss-surgery could offer patients more than a ticket to look better; it could be the best way to manage health and bring about a better self-image.
