Barbie Goes the Burka Way!

The favorite doll of all generations, Barbie finally adopts a veiled avatar for its 50th anniversary.
Ever since their conception in 1959, Barbies have not only won several hearts but have been subject to quite a few controversies and raised eyebrows. Among them, very conspicuous ban imposed by the Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in the Middle Eastern country, Saudi Arabia, in September, 2003. Accusing Barbie of not conforming to Islamic ideals, the committee stated, "Jewish Barbie dolls, with their revealing clothes and shameful postures, accessories and tools are a symbol of decadence to the perverted West. Let us beware of her dangers and be careful." 6 years and several avatars later, Barbie dolls finally donned burkas or veils for a charity auction associated with Sotheby's 'Save The Children' campaign.

Designed by Italian couturier Eliana Lorena, over 500 dolls were showcased on Sunday at the Salone dei Cinquecento in Florence, Italy in the traditional Islamic attire. The money from this auction shall be duly forwarded to the cause of Rewrite the Future campaign, basically tending to children from war afflicted areas, according to Rosie Shannon of Sotheby's. The auction also celebrated the 50th anniversary of Barbie.

Even though this step by Mattel has already received some slack, UK's prominent Barbie fan Angela Ellis, with a collection of more than 250 dolls opines, "I know Barbie was something seen as bad before as an image for girls, but in actuality the message with Barbie for women is you can be whatever you want to be." The company director of Laird Assessors has also backed and defended the show from The Wirral, Cheshire, saying, "Bring it on Burkha Barbie, I think this is a great idea. I think this is really important for girls, wherever they are from, they should have the opportunity to play with a Barbie that they feel represents them."

The much talked about Barbie was launched by Ruth Handler, and has ever since been in controversies related to her African-American and 'Totally Tattoos' versions among others.
