If you check, there are several chemicals which help clear a clogged drain. However, baking soda and white vinegar are the best drain cleaners known and highly efficient amongst many. Why? For the simple reason that they help deodorize along with removal of stains, grease, fats, wax and mildew. Another advantage being, they help softening water. You get both these chemicals in the local market very easily, so purchase good quality ones. And then, the only thing left is going through the process. Let us see the steps involved in unclogging a sink.
- First of all, you need to protect yourself with a pair of goggles and hand gloves because it is not recommended to come in contact with these chemicals. The reaction is highly energetic and thus the necessary care.
- Next, when you are all ready, take 1 cup of baking soda and pour over the drain. Wait for sometime for the baking soda to react with the debris and blockages in the pipe.
- Next, take 1 cup of white vinegar and pour it too. Again, wait for around half an hour. The reaction between vinegar and baking soda releases carbon dioxide which is seen in the form of bubbles and helps loosening the dirt and debris stuck in the pipe.
- Now comes the main step in unclogging a drain. For this, keep water for boiling say around 5-6 cups, and then pour it over the drain slowly so that the debris which has been loosened can be washed off completely. Do not lean over the sink to see the reaction. Stay away since hot water can cause the materials to blow up through the drain and come onto you.
- This is it; the end of one cycle of the entire process. Keep on repeating it until the entire drain gets unclogged, say around 3-4 times.
- It is recommended not to use bleach and vinegar drain cleaner since these two in combination create harmful fumes which shouldn't be inhaled.
- Another thing to keep in mind here is, use this homemade drain cleaner only if you own metal piping for the sinks. Metal can resist the reactions very easily unlike plastic piping which can melt. While, for plastic pipes, confirm the labels before using.
- You would have to carry out this cleaning method at least once a week for it to be effective.
