Baggy eyes is mostly linked to aging. It is a common fact that with age, people develop wrinkles and under eye bags. However, there are numerous people, who develop this problem, at a very young age. It could be a contributory factor for an older or tired look. Apart from aging, baggy eyes can be caused by various other factors.

Causes

Baggy eyes is usually considered a cosmetic concern, rather than a health problem. But, in some cases, health problems can also be behind the occurrence of the condition. So, it will be better to find the real cause for baggy eyes, before resorting to treatment.

Aging

As we all know, aging is the most common cause for the occurrence of baggy eyes. With age, the skin loses its elasticity, causing the fat to accumulate and bulge out. As the skin around the eyes is more vulnerable to this natural process, the fat around the eyes migrate to the lower part of the eyes and form a puffy bag, which is commonly known as under eye bag.

Health Problems

It has been observed that some health problems or illnesses also cause baggy eyes. People who suffer recurrent chronic sinus infections or allergic reactions develop under eye bags with time. Such people develop puffy eyes at the time of infection or allergic attack. Recurrent attacks causes deflation of the skin under eyes resulting in baggy eyes. Some serious health problems like kidney diseases, Graves' disease and thyroid disorders can also cause the condition. So, consult a doctor, if you develop under eye puffiness, without any known cause.

Physical Conditions

Apart from the health problems, there are various bodily conditions, that cause baggy eyes. Fluid retention and dehydration are two of such conditions, which are responsible for this. Fluid retention can be caused by factors like hormonal changes during pregnancy or menstruation or by excess intake of salt. Dehydration is the lack of adequate water in the body, which forces the body to store water. Even regular alcohol consumption may result in this problem.

Other Factors

Apart from the above said causes, there are various other factors, that can lead to this condition. They include poor nutrition, especially vitamin deficiency, lack of adequate sleep, stress and heredity. Sometimes, baggy eyes can be one of the family traits and can be seen in most of the family members. Even regular eye strain from watching television, working on computer, stitching and reading can lead to the condition.

You can resort to some remedies, that can help you fix your problem. Application of cold compresses, moistened tea bags or cotton balls moistened with cold milk, etc. help to tighten the skin around the eyes. If baggy eyes is accompanied with other symptoms like inflammation of other body parts, redness, swelling and itching of eyes and breathing difficulty, seek immediate medical attention. If the condition is recurrent or persistent, then also, consulting a doctor will be beneficial. Otherwise, it can be remedied with a proper and nutritious diet, regular and adequate sleep, regular exercise and drinking lots of fluids.
