Back with a Bang: The Toshiba TG01

Japanese Audacity

After spending months on end in the shadows, Toshiba has finally returned. They’re coming back with a bang through the release of the brand new Toshiba TG01. This mobile is the Japanese company’s attempt to force its way to the forefront of the Smartphone arena which is currently ruled by the Apples, the Sony Ericcsons, and the Nokias. What’s great is their not being too subtle about it. With the TG01, Samsung wants to produce the fastest, thinnest, and most powerful Smartphone in the market – so much for being coy.

Best and Biggest in the Business

Toshiba has given much emphasis on the TG01’s 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor – the fastest one in the market today. This is to be partnered with Windows Mobile 6.1 and we are expecting a free update to the 6.5 version once it is released later this year.

However, the most astounding feature of the TG01 has to be its one of a kind oversized touch screen display which measures an amazing 4.1 inches. Yep, that’s right – 4.1 inches. That’s a whole 0.6 inches bigger than the iPhone 3GS’ screen. Because of the space needed by the screen, the TG01 is also one of the biggest mobiles in the market with the dimensions of 129 x 70 x 9.9 mm. However, it is also one of the thinnest ones around measuring less than a centimetere thick. This is able to balance out its heaviness and bring it down to a normal weight of 129 grams.

Other Features

The Toshiba TG01 will also be equipped with all the features one would expect on a top of the line Smartphone. This includes full data connectivity including support for GPRS (Class 10), HSCSD, EDGE (Class 10), 3G (HSDPA & HSUPA), WLAN (Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g), and Bluetooth (version 2.0 with A2DP). Aside from having a GPS receiver with A-GPS support, the TG01 also comes complete with Pocket Office which allows users to read and edit Microsoft Office files (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, and PDF files).

In terms of built-in applications, the TG01 has a mobile Internet Explorer web browser that has WAP 2.0/xHTML support. Users can also stay connected to their favourite social networking sites via the TG01’s dedicated Facebook and YouTube applications.

The only downside of the TG01 is that its camera is not at all impressive. It is only at 3.15 Megapixels and the only feature currently listed is the autofocus function. The maximum resolution of photos is a mere 2048 x 1536 pixels.
