It can be severe and can be very disturbing both physically and psychologically. It can also mean tremendous pain as we breathe each and every time.

Back pain when breathing is a condition in which the patient experiences pain when he/she breathes. It is a clear indication of muscular backache. When injured, the back muscles gets very sensitive to movement, hence with any rigorous back movement you can experience pain. The breathing process also involves back muscles. The lower back muscles which are in close coordination with the diaphragm and lower chest, and the upper back muscles with upper chest. Hence, if there is a muscle ache in the back, because of this breathing coordination, it will pain more if the muscles are disturbed.

Causes

Back pain is probably one of the most commonest back related problems which most of us face today. It may be because of our ever-changing lifestyle, when we need to sit for long during office hours where we spend most of our times. So what are the causes of severe back pain while inhaling? Since the back muscles are involved in the breathing process, if these muscles are strained, it will cause back pain when breathing. Hence, one of the most commonest reasons for it is, if the back muscles are pulled or strained. Hence, if the right back muscle is pulled, a person will experience pain in that area when breathing. Same goes for middle, upper and also left back pain when breathing.

It is also known as muscle spasm. Back muscle spasm can cause excruciating pain. A bone injury or a bone ache may also cause such back pain. Hence, a heavy physical activity or trying to lift a heavy weight than what your body can actually take can cause muscle ache. Another cause is psychosomatic back pain. It is actually a psychological condition, because of which one experiences back pain. Over here, there is no physical exertion, but then mentally, because of stress or anything else, the patient feels pain in the back when breathing. The pain is for real but it's not caused because of a physical activity. Tension Myositis Syndrome, may also cause back pain when breathing. It is also a type of psychological cause.

Treatment mostly involves resting the back muscles and the spine. You will be recommended not to strain the back bones or muscles or the spine. Allow it to rest for few days or even months. Any physical strain on an already strained muscle will simply worsen the matter. Later, your doctor may prescribe you some medication depending upon your recovery status. Hence, it is important to avoid taking too much of stress, get regular mild exercises like walking and swimming, maintain a good posture, and engage in yoga exercises for back pain.
