Awakenings
This is about a recovering alcoholic. Thankfully, it's not about me. I welcome any constructive comments.
An undying ache at the pit of my belly
So many times, I feverishly shake
Does He even see me wail in the wake?
If only it could be me that He could take
Falling to my knees, drowning in a bottle
Pushing beyond limits, with me at Death's throttle
Sailing down Ol' Whiskey River
Pouring me another, while I shake and shiver
Drunken stupor, cutting so deep
I pray to God for one night's sleep
Praying for a miracle to keep me afloat
I'm in over my head, and I see no boat
Sobriety yet so far away, as my broken dreams float away
When unlikely angels come my way
In God's breath, they simply say "Welcome to A.A."
He takes no joy in my heartache, nor my sorrow
My once broken dreams drift into the shallow
I see the healing light beyond tomorrow
With God's help, I shall find my way
I find out just how much I want to live another day
So many times, I feverishly shake
Does He even see me wail in the wake?
If only it could be me that He could take
Falling to my knees, drowning in a bottle
Pushing beyond limits, with me at Death's throttle
Sailing down Ol' Whiskey River
Pouring me another, while I shake and shiver
Drunken stupor, cutting so deep

Praying for a miracle to keep me afloat
