Avoid Online Diamond Scams
Diamond is another product that can be bought online. There are hundreds of online jewelry shops that offer a wide array of diamond selection you can choose from. Even established jewelers like Karats Jewelers have a website that features some of their products.
Purchasing diamonds online can be done in a flash. You just have to search through full-color, high-resolution images of the diamonds that are displayed on the screen. The diamonds are graded by carat weight, cut, clarity and color. You select a stone you like, enter your credit card number and your diamond will be shipped. It’s just as easy as that, but selecting a diamond just by looking at pictures is not safe way to purchase diamonds. There are many scams involved in this kind of online business so beware.
One of the most common scam when purchasing a diamond through the net is getting fake grading reports or more commonly known as the Diamond Certificate. This certificate documents the attributes of a diamond, including the four Cs, as noted by a gemologist. Jewelers like Karats Jewelers issue this certificate as a proof of a diamond’s authenticity.
The scam is done by copying the grading reports of other diamonds so that diamonds without any grading report can have one. Because of this diamonds are popping up all over the country whose lab grading reports don't match their diamond. Another scam that involves grading reports is Duplicate Lab Grading Reports. This is where the lab grading report is not a forgery but it still does not match the diamond. What the crook does is take a good diamond and grade it two or three times. They then take the extra lab grading reports and put it with a similar looking but lower quality diamond to complete the hustle.
Treated diamonds are also a common scam for online jewelers. These are diamonds that two weeks ago might have been yellow but due to the treatment they are now white because the diamond undergoes a process of heating or baking to turn it white. Baked diamonds are brittle and can break easily, these kind of diamond must be avoided. Sadly, every form of treated diamond is detectable by a lab with the exception of a baked or heat-treated diamond. The only way to avoid being stuck with this type of loss is to make the sale contingent on a breakage guarantee and or money back guarantee.
Aside from the scams online jewelers do not provide the same service that local jewelers like Karats Jewelers provide. When your rings are damaged, online jewelers will just ask you to mail it back but with a fee. These online jewelers don’t even offer yearly inspections or cleaning of their products. There is nothing wrong with purchasing diamonds online but extra precautions should be taken when doing so. Still nothing beats the service of local jewelers like Karats Jewelers.
