Avoid Movers Without Licenses

Moving can be a huge hassle. If you decide hire movers to do the work, resist the temptation to choose the mover offering the lowest quote, especially if the mover is unlicensed. You wouldn’t choose an unlicensed doctor or dentist. Why would you do the same with the firm who will take possession of the entire contents of you home?
When you move, you are putting some of your most priceless and precious items into someone else’s hands. You want to make sure that they will be handled with care and that if something should happen, they will be protected. Unlicensed movers may not provide much protection for loss or damages of your things, if they provide any at all. A licensed mover should give you a free, written estimate. An estimate must be in writing. You should get estimates from a few licensed, professional movers.

As with many other businesses, word of mouth can be the best way to choose a mover. Moving companies rely on good recommendations from previous clients. Asking neighbors, friends, or family about moving companies they have used before, can help or even save you from making a bad decision. You can also ask your real estate agent. They usually know many of the reputable companies around town and could give you their opinion.

When planning to move, price is always one of the first things to come to mind. Costs are determined one of two ways. If the move is less than 50 miles, the price quote will include how many workers are needed and how many hours it takes to load, move, and unload. If the move is more than 50 miles, the price will reflect the total shipment weight and the distance.

You will probably be packing most of your household goods yourself. Know that moving companies will more than likely not accept liability for items you pack yourself. You must pack these items so that the rattling of the truck will not harm them. You should always let the movers know which items are fragile so they can load it accordingly. Never pack important documents, jewelry, money, etc. Always bring them with you.

Unless otherwise discussed with the moving company, be prepared to pay at delivery. You are expected to pay before your things are unloaded. Ask the company which form of payments they accept.

All these things mentioned above, licensed movers know and understand. You protect your belongings and yourself when you choose a licensed mover. Even though a mover may be licensed, still look into the company and try to get reviews from past customers. You can look online to find licensed movers in your state and a review of what was discussed here. For example, in Georgia, you can go to the Georgia Public Service Commission online. Under transportation you can go to moving guide and it will help with your decision. Also, find a mover from the list of over 200 licensed professionals licensed by the Public Service Commission.
