Determinants of NFL Salary
When there is a mention of NFL salary, it is not just the position, be it offense or defense, the player is playing for that matters, there are a few more factors too which matter. These factors are -
Skills
The skills of a player play a crucial role in the pay check he gets. Studies have shown that the better skilled a player is on the field, he gets paid more than others. Interestingly, even a rookie player, who have not even taken a single snap as a pro player can earn more than their pro counterparts. The reason is the sheer potential and raw skill they can bring to the table.
League Average
There are rules which have been laid down by the league regarding player salaries. According to those regulations and as per the NFL Players Association's Collective Bargaining Agreement with the league, the NFL salaries to all players includes a minimum basic salary. This of course increases with the experience and skills.
Some More Factors
The salary is also determined by some other factors like signing bonus, salary cap, the requirement of that player for a team and contracts drawn by players in the same capacity. That can lead to the increase and decrease in salary. Some NFL players receive much more than even Wall Street officials.
What is the Average Salary of NFL Players?
As mentioned above, the position a player plays in a team and how instrumental he is for the performance of the team is the major determinant of what he earns. Quarterbacks get paid the most, to begin with. But right now we will see what is the minimum these players get. The minimum a player on the active roster (for at least 3 games) gets is $295,000, according to the NFL Players Association. This money is guaranteed for such players. To add to that, the average signing bonus is $1.34 million for all players. There are a couple more heads within the NFL salaries 2010, like salary based on the team and some other bonuses apart from the signing bonus. As per these regulations let us take a look at the average salaries by position.
