Avatar: Biggest Grossing Movie Ever

Avatar has managed one more feather in its cap. It has become the biggest grossing movie of all times.
James Cameron's smile is just getting wider. After we reported that Avatar was the fastest film to gross $1 bn ever (read: Avatar: Fastest Film To Gross $1 Billion), now it is confirmed that this science fiction epic has gone on to become the biggest grossing movie ever. It has surpassed Cameron's very own Titanic with worldwide box office touching $1.85 bn on Monday, January 25. And it shows no sign of slowing down, so we are surely going to see it as the first movie ever to touch the $2 bn mark.

The factors that catalyzed Avatar to achieve all these phenomenal feats were the ticket prices being a bit higher as the movie was in 3D animation, and also the fact that it was released around the holiday season. The movie had no competition at all from any other film. Call this a coincidence or a thought about tactic, but these 2 same factors were applicable to Cameron's Titanic too, more than a decade ago. An interesting point to note is that nearly ¾ of Avatar's revenue has come from outside the United States. This is noticeably much more in proportion to most other Hollywood flicks, and obviously one of the main reasons for the film doing extremely well at the box office.

Besides just, top grossing movies ever, if you are interested in looking at how movies have fared after their earnings have been adjusted for inflation, then read Top Grossing Movies of All Time. Now after reading that, many might say Gone With the Wind deserves to take the top spot, but we also have to keep in mind that 50 - 60 years ago, movies that were released played in theaters for longer periods of time, as compared to present times, reason mainly being that at present the number of films made are much more, and theaters are more prone to changing movies screened faster so as to pull in the crowds.

Whatever the argument, hats off to Avatar and James Cameron.
