Autism Symptoms Checklist

Autism is a central nervous system disorder that causes development disability. It is generally diagnosed on the basis of specific criteria for various impairments in interests, activities, imagination, communication and social interaction. There is not a definite list of symptoms that can classify a person as autistic, however, it has been observed that autism sets in before the age of three. The children develop delays in language, speech, social interaction and communication. Autism also results in the child being poor in symbolic or imaginative play.

As we previously pointed out, autism may not have any external symptoms, and it may almost be impossible to recognize children with or without autism. However, it has been pointed out that children with autism have a larger head circumference as compared to non-autistic children. There are other symptoms which have been found in autistic children. Let us take a look.

Autism Symptoms

☑ Unconcerned about Dangers: Autistic children may be completely unconcerned about any dangers to them. For example, autistic children may just stand in the middle of the road or lean low against a window on a high-rise. ☑ No Pretense: Autistic children may show a dislike in playing 'pretend games' from an early age. They will also not cooperate or join other children in group games like hide-and-seek, police, etc. ☑ Unable to bond with other children: Autistic children are not too keen to play with other children. They would not be interested in either getting introduced or spending time with other children. Autistic children generally prefer to stay alone. ☑ Intensity: Autistic children are also known to throw intense tantrums on trivial things. These tantrums can also be violent. Autistic children are also known to be non-cooperative, and don't return smiles when smiled at. ☑ Over-enthusiastic: Autistic children are overly active, but, are immensely non-cooperative and resistant. They have poor eye contact and respond erratically to strangers. ☑ Selfish Behavior: Autistic children may display a selfish behavior, for example getting things only for themselves. They are also very independent for their age and are not comfortable with other people around. Simply put, they are non-social beings since the beginning. ☑ Less Grasping Power: Autistic children will have trouble grasping new knowledge and talents. They may not understand the working of toys as quickly as non-autistic children.

Other symptoms of autism are:

☑ Staring at open areas while not focusing on anything in particular.
☑ Inability to explain what they want.
☑ Spinning around in circles.
☑ Clamping hands on ears.
☑ Desire to be in familiar places.
☑ Failure to follow directions and the concept of pointing.
☑ Walking on toes.
☑ Having odd movement patterns.
☑ Delay in developing language skills and speech.
☑ Failure to follow direction.

These were some symptoms associated with autism. Due to the nature of this disorder, it becomes very important for parents to monitor the development of the child in the early stage. Also, if you suspect that your child is showing behavior that may be deviating from normal, you should immediately seek medical advice. Often, people yield to wrong advice and wait for some more time to confirm if there is something that is not fine, but it can very well turn out to be a missed opportunity for your child. Nothing can replace 'expert advice', and therefore, without wasting further time or being skeptic about the issue, it would be great if you get your child checked with a specialist.
