Chapter Two:

Levi:

His head was throbbing, and felt like it weighed a thousand pounds. So much pain...he was in so much pain. His ears were ringing, and his side felt like it was on fire. Where was he? Was he sleeping? Everything seemed so groggy...

And then it all came back to him. The fight with his dad. Going to see Kayleigh. Driving to the park...the accident. His eyes snapped open, but he immediately regretted the decision. Bright white lights shone down on him, and he cringed as his eyes adjusted to the harsh lighting. He tried to get his bearings and found that there was an oxygen tube underneath his nose, and an IV running to his right arm. He was in the hospital.

At that moment, a nurse walked into the room and gently smiled at him. "Oh, you're awake. Don't try to move too much sweetie. You're pretty banged up; you've got a nasty gash in your right side and --"

"Kayleigh. Where's Kayleigh?" He interrupted her, and lifted his head to look around. Another bad idea. As soon as his head left the pillow, nausea and dizziness overcame him. He groaned and rested his head down again.

The nurse made a sympathetic noise and said, "Honey, I told you you're pretty banged up. You've got one heck of a concussion, and that head of yours needs to stay on the pillow for a good while, you hear me?"

Levi felt like that one lift of his head had drained all his energy. He barely felt like speaking, but he had to know. "Fine. But I NEED to know if Kayleigh his okay. Where is she? Is she..." He couldn't bring himself to finish that sentence, but what memories he did have from the crash told him that Kayleigh could not be doing all that great. He felt a lump in his throat as he waited for the nurse to respond.

She pondered his question for a moment, and then quietly responded, "Well, she's alive..." Her voice trailed off.

"But?" Levi pressed her for more information. Knowing that she was alive lifted a huge weight off his shoulders, but he needed to know what was wrong.

"But...she's in really bad shape. Extremely bad. Sweetie she had some internal bleeding, four broken ribs, a broken left arm and leg...and she's in surgery right now. Her spleen is torn, and they need to get that repaired right away. Also...there's one more thing you should know. Sweetie, are you okay? You've just been in a bad accident and you don't look so hot. You're gonna need to rest soon."

Levi felt as if all the life had been sucked out of him as the nurse rattled off all of Kayleigh's injuries. All because he needed to go on a stupid car ride... "I'm okay, just tell me what's wrong."

"Well, her brain is swollen inside her skull right now. The doctors are doing everything they can to alleviate that pressure and get her brain back down to normal, but as of now, she is in a coma."

"Oh my God..." He was at a loss for words. He choked down a sob, but the tears were relentless. It was all his fault. If she didn't survive...just the thought drove him crazy. He pushed it away quickly, asking, "How long will she be in the coma?"

The nurse paused once again. "I'm gonna be honest with you, it's really hard to tell. It could be days, it could be weeks...it could be months. Comas are tricky things."

He honestly felt like his heart was tearing apart inside of him. He didn't think he could handle anymore bad news. Suddenly, he felt more tired than he could ever remember feeling. "I think I need to sleep..."

"I think that is a very good idea, young man. Let me just talk to you about your OWN injuries for a minute." Levi nodded wearily for her to continue, already shutting his eyes. "Your concussion is our primary concern. Your head hit that window pretty hard, from the looks of it. We stitched you up back there no problem. We also stitched up your side, but that gash is gonna take a good while to heal. Other than that, you only suffered minor injuries. Overall, I'd say you are pretty lucky. It could have been a lot worse."

A lot worse like Kayleigh's, Levi thought sadly. He barely remembered the nurse telling him he should get some more rest before he was drifting back off into an exhausted sleep.

Kayleigh:

She was in a church. Why was she is a church? Everything seemed bright white and blurry...but it was beautiful. The windows were all stained glass; there were flowers lining the altar where the preacher's pulpit stood. The pews were a beautiful deep red velvet.

But why was she sitting in a church? Hadn't she been doing something just now? She remembered something about an accident...but that all seemed so far away. And this place was so beautiful, dreamy almost.

That's when she saw her. Kayleigh turned around for no reason in particular, just as someone opened the doors to the church and stepped inside. Her grandmother. The light from the outside seemed to encompass her; it was so bright. So beautiful.

Kayleigh had been close to her grandmother ever since she was a little girl. They lived only minutes apart, and Kayleigh spent almost as much time at her grandmother's house as her own. When she died of cancer when Kayleigh was fifteen, it devastated her. Wait...she had died. What was she doing here?

Kayleigh's thoughts were blurry and confused as she broke into a smile upon the sight of her grandmother. She seemed to glow as she said, "Kayleigh, my precious baby girl. I've missed you so much." She opened up her arms, as if expecting a hug.

Although thoughts of the accident and of Levi were traveling around somewhere in the back of Kayleigh's mind, the most important thing at the moment seemed to be her grandmother. She wanted nothing more than to walk over to her, walk into that beautiful bright light, and hug her. She smiled as she stood to go to her.

Levi:

Levi was awoken from his sleep as a team of doctors and nurses rushed by, muttering anxiously and worriedly amongst themselves. He heard the words "code blue" uttered, and his heart seemed to drop into his stomach. Somehow he knew, he just KNEW it was Kayleigh.

All other thoughts left his mind as he sat himself up, ripped off the oxygen and the IV, and gritted his teeth against the pain and dizziness from his head. He stood up, steadied himself for a moment, and then walked after the team who had just rushed by. He saw them disappear through the ICU doors, and followed close behind. His heart was hammering in his chest; sweat dripped down his temples.

"Levi! Levi, you cannot go back there. Son, you need to come back here RIGHT now!" He heard the nurse calling his name and knew she would be coming after him now. But he didn't care, he plowed through the ICU doors and rushed to the room where the doctors had just entered.

"We've got a code blue! Can't get a pulse, no breath. She's flat-lining! Start CPR, and set up the defibrillator." The doctors and nurses were all working quickly and efficiently, remaining calm.

Levi, however, felt like he was going to throw up. There, laying on the bed, was Kayleigh. She barely looked like herself...she almost looked like she was already...he couldn't bring himself to even think it. "Baby, you've gotta come back. You've gotta make it. I need you." He knew he was yelling, and a nurse gave him a questioning look. But he didn't care. As Kayleigh's heart rate was crashing, so was his entire world.

"Somebody get that kid out of here." And at that exact moment, the nurse attending to him burst through the doors. She grabbed his arm and dragged him away.

"Honey they're doing everything they can. Let them do their job." He helplessly let her lead him back to his room, and he crashed onto his bed, the sobs racking his entire body. What was he going to do if she didn't make it? A world without Kayleigh...he couldn't even imagine it.
