Attractions and Accommodation in St Andrews
St Andrews is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Fife and offers a mixture of historic buildings and top class golf facilities. This article has information on accommodation options and the most popular local attractions.
Attractions
The main attraction in St Andrews is golf and there are several golf courses available to play within the town. The Old Course is the most famous and popular course to play on and its popularity means that a ballot system is used to decide who gets to play on the course.
If you don’t want to play a full round of golf then you can practice your swing at the driving range, which is just off the Old Course. There you can get professional tuition and lessons, which make use of video technology and the latest tuition techniques. If you are looking for something more informal then the Himalaya putting green offers some good entertainment for novices and families.
If you are not interested in golf then there are other attractions in St Andrews which are well worth seeing. In the summer the beach is popular for relaxing and offers a great view of St Andrews. If you are fit then the Fife Coastal Path runs through St Andrews and you can walk the entire path in around 7 days.
There are plenty of historic buildings throughout St Andrews, the two most visited are St Andrews Castle and St Andrews Cathedral. Both are maintained by Historic Scotland and you can visit them separately or buy a joint ticket and visit both for under £10.
Accommodation
St Andrews has a relatively small population but there is a large selection of luxury hotels available. Several of these are set along the Old Course and offer excellent views of the course from the guestrooms.
The two main luxury hotels are the Old Course and the Fairmont St Andrews which are both five star hotels. The Old Course has an idyllic location situated in the middle of the town’s most famous golf course. There are a range of luxury rooms and suites and most rooms offer panoramic views.
The Fairmont St Andrews is a couple of miles outside St Andrews but it also offers top class spa facilities and luxury guestrooms. There are two championship golf courses on-site for golf enthusiasts and a range of leisure activities to keep you entertained.
If you are looking for a mid-range hotel then there are plenty of options available, one of the most popular hotels is the Best Western Scores Hotel. The hotel is a few minutes walk from the town centre and is adjacent to the first tee of the Old Course. Another option is the St Andrews Golf Hotel which has a central location in town and a total of 22 en-suite rooms. It also houses one of St Andrews most affluent and popular bars, Ma Bells.
If you are on more of a tight budget and are just looking for a bed for the night the best value in St Andrews is the St Andrews Tourist Hostel. There you will find accommodation from only £14 per night and the hostel is in a great location only a couple of minutes from shops, restaurants and bars in the town centre.
The hostel has some good facilities available with internet, self catering kitchen and a lounge area. This is a great place to meet other travelers and possibly make some new friends.
It is best to book your accommodation before you go if you are visiting in the summer months as the town does get really busy. If the open golf tournament is being held in St Andrews then be prepared to pay a little extra for the duration of the tournament as most vendors tend to raise their prices for the impending masses of tourists.
