Support Guidelines for Children with ADHD

Children affected by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD should be handled with care. Here are a few guidelines that can help you.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a common disorder that affects many children. The disorder is related to the nervous system of children. It results in a condition in which the affected child is unable to pay attention to the tasks in front of him/her. This disorder can also continue until adulthood. There is no medical cure for ADHD. However, proper care and guidance can help the child fight it. Given below are some ways you can do that.

Preach Confidence and Positivity
Teach the child to stay positive in whatever action he or she does. Invoke confidence in him for all that he does. Teach him what should be done rather than what he should not. Praise him for every little good thing he does. Seeing that he gets applauded for some things that he does, he will strive to do them better.

Schedule Activities at Home
Maintain a schedule for everything that he needs to do, right from waking up in the morning, performing the chores, eating, studying, playing etc. Ensure that the child follows the schedule strictly. Giving him a routine will help him understand and perform the tasks better.

Be Patient
Whenever you guide the child, maintain a calm demeanor. Harsh behavior towards the child could further suppress the child. When assigning him a work, be sure that you split the job into small sub-divisions and direct him to do it one by one. This tends to reduce the pressure on the child.

Help with Academics
Always assist the child in all his activities related to school. Be with him while he does homework and assignments. Assist him in any way he needs. This will give him a positive mindset and self-confidence. Some children tend to develop hatred towards going to school because of the extra-pressure on them. In such cases, be with them and teach positive things about going to school. Assist them in getting ready for school and dropping them at school. Directing the teachers to pay special attention to the child will also help.

Help with Extra-curricular Activities
Being with the child in his academics alone will do no good. He must develop communication with other children of his age. This needs a better understanding of the child's interests. Support him by encouraging him according to what he's interested in. This will help him gain the confidence to join others who share the same interests. Help in every way you can to make him discover something that he really enjoys doing, and you will see how beautifully he does it.

Acknowledge the Work
Praise and acknowledge the child's work, whether big or small. Look only at the efforts and not at the outcomes. Praising the hard-work will certainly give him a lot of confidence and can push them further to do more.

Helping a child cope with ADHD is only as difficult as the parents think it is. So, give it your all, and your child will shower you with immense love and affection.
