Atlanta Movers use of descriptive inventory

The "Descriptive Inventory" is one of most important pieces to your Moving puzzle. Understanding what a descriptive inventory is and how it is used by your Movers and you as the customer can help you avoid many common moving pitfalls.
Mover’s commonly use a few key documents for most local and long distance moving services and you as a customer will be asked to sign most of these. All documents signed are very important and should be understood prior to signing. The "descriptive inventory" or "inventory" as it is also referred to is one of the more important documents you will be asked to sign as part of your move.

Most professional Atlanta movers use descriptive inventories on all moves that travel out of town between states also known as "interstate moves", as well as moves that travel out of town but inside the state also known as "instate moves", and finally local moves that start and stop within a 50 mile radius. So what is the descriptive inventory and what is it used for. As its name implies the "descriptive inventory" is a listing of all items to be moved with a detailed description of those items prior to them being handled by Movers.

Each and every item to be moved will be listed and will normally have an inventory sticker attached to it (listing the piece number starting at 001 and lot number) that is then recorded on the inventory form. The items are then described using industry standard symbols and codes to further describe the piece. For example if first item in the shipment is a sofa the item would be tagged 001. The mover would then record 001 on the inventory form and write a brief description (white sofa). If the sofa had a tear in the fabric at the front right hand side the Mover would then write "T-4/8 or T-4-8". "T" stands for torn "4" is "front" and "8" is right. Another example would be a box packed by you the customer is recorded as the second item and the box has water stains in the card board.

The mover would then record item 001 "box PBO-CU-ST". Box "PBO" packed by owner (customer packed the box)- "CU" contents unknown (the mover’s have not inspected the contents of the box)-"ST" (stained the box was stains on it). Most inventory forms used by Atlanta Movers actually have all the Descriptive Symbols, Exception Symbols, and Location Symbols listed at the top of the form with a definition of each. It is very important to understand what your Atlanta Mover has listed on the inventory, the condition of the items on the inventory (based on the symbols used to describe), and that those items are checked off and delivered at the new destination.

Your mover will ask you to sign the inventory at the beginning of the move agreeing with the description, exception, and location of the exception/"damages" prior to being handled by the mover and then again at the end of the move after finishing delivery by the mover. Take a minute at the beginning of the move to ensure you agree with the items description and described damages prior to signing and make sure to check each item off as it is being delivered because the signed inventory form will be used to clarify the items condition at the end of the move if you believe an item has suffered damage or was not delivered/went missing during the move.
