Arts and Crafts for Toddlers

One of the best fun ways to educate kids is through activities like arts and crafts, which promote creativity and encourage learning.
Just imagine a bunch of toddlers in a classroom, where they are being taught alphabets on the board with no learning aids. There will be total chaos, the kids won't learn anything and neither will they allow the teacher to go on for a long time. Toddlers are naturally very curious and impatient, traditional means of classroom teaching does not work, therefore arts and crafts is the easiest way to propagate learning. Kids' crafts have evolved over time and have gone from being just fun activities to becoming an integral tool of education. There have been numerous studies that indicate preschoolers learn quickly and remember for a long time if information is imparted using arts and crafts.

Children are very creative and we need to tend to this creativity and help them along their way to a bright future. Arts and crafts have been used since a long time by humans to pass knowledge onto the next generation. Today, a head start on education can make the difference between success and failure, so more and more parents are experimenting with arts and crafts. Here are a few ideas that you could try to give your child that learning edge.

Coloring: Every child likes to color and, their liking for bright colors is well-known. But maybe not so much appreciated by parents because, they are the ones who need to clean up after the little artist. This natural ability of toddlers can be manipulated into teaching them about colors. Stencil words like blue, green, red and yellow with space inside the alphabets to color. Give your toddler a blue marker and ask to color inside the word blue, also teach to correctly pronounce the word by saying the word in regular intervals.

You can make this interesting by drawing things which are associated with the specific color for the toddler to color. For example draw an apple or a tomato and ask the toddler to color it with a red marker, teaching to associate colors with fruits and vegetables is one of the quickest way to teach your child about them. One of the simplest craft ideas for kids is teaching them to draw figures like sun, moon, stars, trees and mountains which are relatively easy to draw and comprehend is also a very good idea to teach kids about nature and our surroundings.

Paper Craft: Arts and crafts for infants and toddlers have been known to improve their dexterity and cognitive skills. The Japanese art of origami uses paper folding techniques to turn a piece of paper into a work of art, you can derive a few simplistic designs from this and teach your toddler about paper craft. Some things you could teach are making a boat or an air plane, this way the child gets to know about modern-day transport. Other craft ideas for kids are to draw figures on a piece of paper and give colored straws to the kids asking them to paste it on the figures.

Some crafts are quite easy to teach, for example, making a bookmark out of paper. Cut a piece of paper in a slender rectangle and get some buttons and Christmas ribbons for the kids, give them a free hand when it comes to sticking the buttons on the rectangle piece of paper. Encourage them to use the ribbon in a way that it acts as the handle of the bookmark.

Arts and crafts using materials like beads, straws, paper cups and ribbons is useful in keeping them interested in learning new things. Some art designs need to be supervised by adults because these designs warrant the use of scissors and glue.
