How to Make an Artificial Putting Green Turf

• 11 PVC Pipes (10 foot)

• PVC Purple Primer
• Zip Ties Ladder

Method

The first thing that needs to be decided is the size of your putting green. Selecting an area that does not allow water to pool or accumulate is essential. Clear the area of all debris, rocks, stumps, and any other organic material that can rot. Lay a 4" layer of gravel. Cover the gravel with silica sand. This helps in drainage and will not allow anything to grow under the putting green. If you have a vibrating compactor, run it over the surface to make it firm. If you do not have a compactor, do not worry, several stomps over the surface will do the trick.

Once the surface is firm, lay down the strip of artificial turf. Remember, not all turf is suitable for putting greens. You should visit a golf turf supplier instead of a yard supplier. When using multiple pieces of turf, make sure all turf the pieces are laid out in one direction. After the turf has been unrolled, water it once. The suction allows it to adhere to the gravel layer laid down before.

It is now time to construct the driving-range frame at one end of the putting green. 10 by 10 by 10 feet is the standard measurement for driving-range cages. Many readymade frames are available at golf-supply companies. However, it is also very easy to build one yourself. You can use 11 lengths of 10-foot PVC pipes, 6 three-way connectors, and two elbow connectors to build a driving-range frame.

Connect the PVC pieces to make a box with three sides. Paint a purple primer on the PVC. Then, link the PVC pieces to each other with the help of PVC glue. Hang thin mesh netting from three walls of the driving-range frame and use zip ties to affix the netting at every foot to the top bar. Coat the back netting with chalk dust to help you see exactly where your drives hit the netting.

Voila! Your personal artificial putting green is ready. One can now enjoy hours of golfing fun with family or friends.
