Army Kids (Chapter 2 and Chapter 3)

"Did you ever know that you're my hero?" <3
CHAPTER 2

On my way to Mark's house sometimes I stop by the memory garden and say a prayer for Derek's uncle who was killed while fighting for our country last year. This barbecue will be tough on Derek and his family.

When I got to Mark's house everyone was already there.

"Hey guys, sorry I'm late. I stopped by the memory garden for a second"

Right away I look at Derek and he smiles and I smile back because he knew I said a prayer for his uncle.

"It's okay. Come here pull up a chair and start making the banners because you are the only one with nice handwriting" says Alyssa

I sit down and begin writing and drawing the banners. They are going to say 'Welcome to the 15th Annual Remembrance Barbecue'. As I was working I received a text message on my sidekick from Mark. He asked me if I went to the garden for D's uncle. I swear this kid knows me like the back of his hand. It's true though, Mark knows everything about me.

"So it's your turn this year Joey for the big speech" says Alyssa

"I know, I have no idea what I am going to say"

"Don't worry, you'll think of something" says Derek

"I don't even know what I have to say you know" I say

"You just have to talk about the army and how we are all a family and stuff like that you know" Mark says

"Yeah that's true" I say

That day we finished everything we had to finish. This annual barbecue is just a way to remember everyone who dies and all soldiers in our families fighting. It is a way for the whole community to come together.

CHAPTER 3

The next day, or night rather, I had to babysit for Derek's little sister until him and his mom came home from a meeting. Derek's father just came home last week from his deployment. I don't know how Derek isn't so scared when his dad is gone after the death of his uncle. This is why I don't want my brother Kyle going off because I am going to have to worry about two members of my family. Derek and his mom are now home.

"Was she good?" asks Derek

"Oh yes...she is always good" I say and smile at his little sister, She loves me.

"Good, good. Um Joey do you wanna do me a favor and take a walk to the memory garden with me real quick?" Derek says

"Yeah sure...come on" I say

We are on our way.

The garden is so nice. It has little flags and stones with the name of the soldier in your family and you can put flowers and other things near each stone.

"It is so beautiful out tonight" I say as we are looking at his uncle's memorial

"It is" says Derek

"So you came here yesterday didn't you?" asks Derek

"Yeah. I figured I'd say a quick prayer" I say

"Well...thanks" he says and smiles

I could see his eyes are getting a little bit watery.

"Its gunna be hard for you next week at the barbecue, isn't it?" I say sadly

"Yeah I guess. You know, it is going to be sad for everyone though" he says

I see him tearing up more now,

"I really miss him, you know?" he says

"I know, I know" I say and give him a comforting hug.

"You know you are like the only person I can talk to about these things" he says

"Yeah?" I ask and smile

"Yeah" he says and stares back at his uncle's name. Lieutenant John Willows.

"Would you ever join the army?" I ask him

"I don't know, you know it's hard because...I don't know it's just hard. I see what kind of life it is for my dad and all the others and it's like you can be deployed at any minute of any day" Derek says

"I get what you mean" I say

"How's Kyle doing?" he asks

"I guess he is doing okay. He is coming to the barbecue so everyone can see him there. I am sure your sister misses him" I say

I forgot to mention that Kyle and Derek's older sister, Kristen, are going out. They have been together for about two years now.

"Yeah she does. Even though she is away at college she does miss him a lot. But she will be home next week too"

"Oh that's good" I say

"What do you say we get out of here?" he says

"Okay" I say and smile. I give him a hug.
