Army Kids (Chapter 1)
This is the first time I am doing separate chapters...one a day so I hope you like this story..."And when a hero comes along, with the strength to carry on...the hero lies in you"
CHAPTER 1
The first year my father was deployed was hard for my family. There wasn't a day that went by when we did not think of him. Every goodbye is scary, especially when there is a chance the person you said goodbye to won't come back home. But with every goodbye you learn. You learn to face reality, you learn to stay strong, and you learn to become closer to God. Luckily for my dad he did come home safe that first year. I was seven then. I am now seventeen and it has been ten years that my dad is in the army. I guess he has been deployed about five times in those years which is pretty good considering other soldiers who go every year.
When my dad, Colonial Bassollo, joined the army, my family and I had to move into an army base town where the other wives and children of soldiers lived. So we have been living here for quite a while. I have a brother and he is training right now for the army. He is twenty and he isn't sure if he wants to be part of the army yet but he will certainly have the training for it. My mother is a radio show host for the base and she pretty much works full-time. So it is really just me and my dad around the house most of the time that is when I am not hanging out with my best friends.
My name is Kelly-Jo but everyone calls me Joey. My best friend is Alyssa Johnson. Her dad is Lieutenant Johnson. He has been in the army since she was born. Alyssa is an only child. She lives on my street. My other best friend, or well best guy friend, is Derek Willows. Derek's father is Colonial Willows. I believe he has been in the force for about ten or eleven years. Derek is not the kind of best friend who is like a brother to me. Derek is more like a friend with benefits. He kind of has a crush on me. Now the best friend brother type would be Mark. He is my diary and I tell him everything. Even though we are all home schooled and live in this army bubble, it is the biggest and most important thing we share and our bond will never change. We will always be army kids.
I am now on my way to Mark's house. Derek and Alyssa are going to be there too. We are helping to set up for the annual "Remembrance Barbecue". I will actually have to make a speech this year... Lucky me.
