Financial hardships can be tough, and you may feel like that the only way out of it all is to file for bankruptcy. Perhaps your family or friends suggested it, or maybe your lawyer advised you. You even may have asked yourself if there are other options available. You are right for doing that.

Filing for bankruptcy is a tough decision to make because you can eliminate almost all of your debt legally and rebuild your financial life, but it would be under the courts supervision and certain restrictions to how you use your credit applies. It will hamper your credit score greatly, so you will have a lot of difficulty receiving a loan, buying a car, or do other things that are debt related. No matter what, bankruptcy will change your life, so it is best to educate yourself about it and know what to expect.

Who Files For Bankruptcy?

People with medical expenses

A 2005 Harvard University study showed that the top reason for filing for bankruptcy is to eliminate medical debt. If this is your reason for filing, you should check out what your state offers in helping with their medical care costs.

People who are annoyed by creditors

The constant creditor calling and harassment never ends, and it drives people crazy to the point of filing for bankruptcy. If this sounds like you, you should talk to a lawyer to see if there is a legal opportunity to end the harassments.

People who lost their car

Many people who are behind on car payments find that their car is on the verge of being repossessed and look to bankruptcy as a possible option of eliminating their debt. However, they should know that creditors are willing to come up with a revised payment option, because it is harder to repossess a car.

People who have wage garnishments

The state and federal departments install laws that are meant to protect you from wage garnishment and to help you stay at a minimum standard of living. Speak with a lawyer, if you think that you are in the midst of a wage garnishment.

People who are laid-off

If you are one of many people who was laid-off and owe a lot of debt, contact your local unemployment office for advice on how to survive financially for the next six months. You should also seek out educational programs what will help you learn a new career path or give you more experience in your current field.

Bankruptcy could be the best option for your situation, but it should not be your only option. In fact, bankruptcy should be your last resort. Before choosing it, make sure to exhaust every possible option. Most importantly, remember that filing for bankruptcy is ultimately your decision and your decision alone.
