Arby's

If you are in the mood for a roast beef sandwich and curly fries the place to go to is Arby's.
Arby's is a fast food chain located in the United States and Canada. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Wendy's/Arby's Group. This fast food restaurant is mostly known for its roast beef sandwiches and curly fries. Its menu also offers chicken sandwiches, appetizers, salads, deli-style sandwiches, wraps and submarine sandwiches. All together there are 3,688 Arby's restaurants in the U.S. and Canada. A new "prototype" restaurant was opened in 1993 in Colonial Heights, Virginia where besides the regular Arby's menu, Mexican, rotisserie chicken/vegetable and Eskimo Pie lines were also offered. Another "prototype" can be found in the West End of Richmond, Virginia and is the biggest Arby's in the world. Both have elegant interior design and spacious seating and expansive ceilings. In 1964 Forrest and Leroy Raffel who owned a restaurant equipment business decided that there was room in the fast food business for a restaurant that featured other food than hamburgers. They founded Arby's in Youngstown, Ohio and opened the first new restaurant on July 23, 1964 in Boardman, Ohio, located just outside Youngstown. At first only roast beef sandwiches, potato chips and drinks were sold. Arby's restaurants are known by the famous Arby's "hat" which was designed by Peskin Sign Company.

Expansion of Arby's took place in the 1970s with 50 stores opening per year. At this time new menu items were created including Beef n' Cheddar, jamocha shakes, curly fries and two signature sauces - Arby's Barbeque Sauce and horseysauce. In 1991 it became the first fast food restaurant to offer a lite menu with several sandwiches and salads under 300 calories and 94% fat free. Triarc Companies purchased Arby's in 1993 and in 2001 market fresh deli style sandwiches and salads were added. Wraps were introduced in 2003 and the toasted sub line in 2007.

The chain adopted an experimental mascot in the early 2000s. On the company's TV commercials in addition to the cowboy hat, an anthropomorphic oven mitt appeared and was voiced by actor Tom Arnold. NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth is currently sponsored by Arby's. The restaurant promises to give away free medium curly fries on the Monday following any of Kenseth's race wins. The only thing customer's have to do is to bring in an official race result from a newspaper or website. In a series of adverts in early 2009 Arby's sponsored heavy metal drummer Vinnie-Paul Abbott. Currently Arby's is using the slogan "I'm thinking Arby's". A new advertising campaign came out in April 2008 featuring the Arby's Rescue Brigade which is a group of Arby's enthusiasts whose sole mission is to "save the world from ordinary fast food." The leader of the Brigade is Captain John Maddox who travels around the country in a Rescue Mobile to save anyone who is eating bland, unsatisfying fast food.

Arby's became the first national fast food chain in February 2006 to claim not to use any artificial additives to its chicken products and they announced that they were eliminating all trans-fats from their menu in early 2006. Arby's Restaurant Group (ARG) signed a contract with Pepsi in early 2008 making Pepsi the chain's exclusive soft drink provider.
