Aquarium Care
Before you plan to have that aquarium, there are loads of things you would need to look into. Read on for tips for aquarium care that can guide you to have a clean aquarium and healthy fish as pets!
Tips on Aquarium Care:
When you have installed the aquarium at home, you need to firstly consider the water that is used in the aquarium. Ensure that the water preparation chemicals are added in advance. Besides, you would also have to keep the air pump running in this water for at least 24 hours before you place your fish in the water. You will also need to keep a check on the filtration process of the water. It should be such that the water should be aerated and should not contain any sediment.
Once you have set up your aquarium, do not fill it with too many fish in one go. You will need to add a few fish and wait for a month before you add more to the group. Restrain yourself from buying too many fish at a time. Always remember, you have to choose your fish very carefully. There are certain varieties of fish that do not have the right temperament to get along with other fish, therefore consult your local pet store, which can guide you to choose the right kind of fish.
Cleaning the aquarium is one of the major aspects of aquarium care. You can take a look in the pet store where you can get specific cleaning kits that can help to ease the process. Always remember to avoid removing more than 30% of the water at a time. Water changes are required to keep the level of the nutrients in the water at a specific level; having changes in this can affect the growth of the fish. You can buy packets that contain different liquids used to maintain the chemical levels of the water. Always buy products that belong to the same manufacturer.
Lighting is very important for proper aquarium care. This would also depend if your aquarium has real plants along with the fish. Room light is generally fine for fish otherwise; it helps to keep them active. Light does not need to be kept on during the day, it needs to be used while feeding or if you simply wish to use it to observe the fish. Light is more useful for the growth of the plants. Experts have an opinion that light also affects the color of the fish. Light is therefore necessary but you must exercise control over the usage for maximum benefits. You can even go in for a light timer that can turn the light off after the required period.
Proper aquarium care would also require you to balance the temperature of the water. This would also depend upon the kind of fish you have introduced in the aquarium. Look for aquarium heaters that can help you maintain the necessary levels. If the temperature of the water is higher than necessary, it can have an increased amount of bacteria and less proportion of oxygen in the water.
If you happen to see dead plant bits or dirt, you can remove this with the help of a fish net. The rest can be cleaned out with the help of a filter. If there is too much of such substance, there can be a reason for the same. It would mean that you might be overfeeding the fish or are unable to maintain the aquarium properly.
Smelly fish water would mean there is an excess of the fish food than what is required. Greedy fish eat more and can produce extra waste which is yet another reason for the water to stink. In such cases, avoid cleaning out the entire aquarium. Therefore, always arrange to have partial water changes with the help of an aquarium siphon. This siphon can help to suck up the waste that accumulates in the water.
Tap water is not useful for your aquarium fish. Remember, however safe it may be for us, it is not beneficial for the fish. Therefore, pouring tap water in the aquarium can kill a large number of filter bacteria. If you have unfortunately, already done this, then you need to use products that will replace the bacteria, which have been destroyed by the untreated tap water.
If you are using plastic plants in the aquarium, you will need to rinse them at regular intervals, as these tend to get covered with algae. To keep the quantity of algae under control, try adding a few fish that eat algae. Too much algae in the fish tank can suggest that you are overfeeding the fish. This could also mean you have left the lights on for a longer period of time.
The key to proper aquarium care is observation. Be extremely particular with the amount of food your fish eats. Sometimes, some varieties are extremely finicky or you may be having a bully fish in the midst. Observe to if all the fish get along well with each other. Look out for the condition of the fish to know if they are healthy.
Having a thermometer can help you to note the temperature of the water. Note the temperature on a daily basis. Keep a regular check on the equipments at all times. This will go a long way in aquarium care.
