Antifungal Diet

There are several fungal illness and infections that can plague the health of many people. One of the best ways to prevent fungal infections, such as yeast infections, is to follow an antifungal diet.
There are some specific conditions where the human body is invaded by fungi. Certain antibiotics prescribed by physicians are very effective in wiping out such microbes. The human immune system is also capable of getting rid of fungi. In addition to that, such a diet also effectively aids the antibiotics and immune system to eliminate the invading fungus. Two very prominent conditions where one can successfully use a specific diet to treat infections are mycosis and yeast infection.

What is Antifungal Diet?

In most fungal infections, microbes thrive on nutrition that is already present in the body. In addition to that, the fungi also tends to produce many toxic substances in the body. The invasion of these fungi leads to nemesis of several cells and tissues in the human body. Immediate symptoms of such infections are observed in the form of fever, loose motions or acid reflux. Firstly this diet plan is designed in such manner that intake of nutrients that are used by the fungi are curtailed and secondly, food products that have antifungal properties are included in the diet.

What not to Eat?

Fungi, that invade the human body, basically thrive on direct sugars. Direct sugars are the source of nutrition that get induced into the blood flow through the digestive system. These sugars tend to provide the human body with a good amount of energy after metabolism. The sugars which are utilized by the fungi include the following:
  • Fructose
  • Lactose
  • Maltose
  • Glucose
  • Mannitol
In short, one should avoid all the food products that contain these carbohydrate and sugar variants. Cakes, pastries, honey, cookies and any syrup containing food products are bound to contain the above-mentioned sugars. Candies, gum and chocolates should be also avoided. Fruits, such as apples and bananas, must also be avoided as they contain several sugar variants. Many of you may prefer to have packaged foods, but during the course of infection, it is essential that you check the ingredients of these foods, as most soups and cereals contains sugar. It is also advisable to avoid food products that have been fermented in the course of their preparation. Alcoholic drinks and malt products are also a strict no-no. Instead, one can have antifungal drinks.

What to Eat?

It is best to follow a diabetic diet or some successful diet plan such as the 1200 calorie diet menu or 2800 calorie diet menu. Physicians have also recommended the consumption of diabetic food products for patients suffering from acute fungal infections. Fresh green vegetables, beans, grains and nuts are recommended as they give the body sufficient proteins and carbohydrates for antibody production. Broccoli and asparagus are two vegetables that are recommended by doctors, in cases of fungal infection (a good excuse to have some!). At times when people suffer from chronic fungal infection, dietitians recommend them specific diet plans, complete with antifungal recipes. If one sticks to the diet plan, the fungi are eliminated in the shortest possible time.
