Antidepressants and Weight Gain
Weight gain is a major side-effect of antidepressant drugs. However, the exact relation is not yet known. Almost all of them cause weight gain. However, there are a few that cause weight loss, while others keep the weight neutral.
SSRIs is a class of antidepressants that includes drugs like, Prozac, Paxil, Luox and Celexa. Prozac may cause weight loss in people who are taking this drug. But, major weight loss is not seen in any of them. Another antidepressant that has reported weight loss is Wellbrutin. Wellbrutin often causes loss of appetite and weight loss along with vomiting and nausea. Many people who do not want to follow diet and exercise programs, are using these drugs for weight loss. However, it is highly dangerous to take these drugs without a prescription. Many people are bypassing a doctor's consultation for these drugs and taking them to reduce weight. Drugs that do not affect the weight, are Effexor, Cymbalta and Serzone.
If any depressant is causing weight gain, you can ask your doctor about a suitable diet and workout routine. If the problem of weight gain becomes a serious issue, then you can ask him to change the medication. Apart from the side-effects of weight gain and weight loss, there are other side-effects as well. They include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sexual health problems and constipation.
In the end, I would like to suggest that taking antidepressants for weight loss is a very bad solution for reducing weight. Instead, go for a healthy diet and a good exercise routine. This will keep you more healthy than taking medications and suffering from the unwanted side-effects. Keep in mind that drugs and medicines are not meant for reducing or gaining weight.
