Another Mesothelioma Lawsuit Filed in Illinois

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that most commonly affects the lining of the lungs. The amount of people diagnosed with the disease is steadily increasing each year, as those who were exposed to asbestos decades ago are finally experiencing symptoms. Mesothelioma occurs when toxic asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested into to body.

Reed says he was employed as a maintenance worker, engineer, and laborer between 1947 and 1992 in several different locations in Illinois. In addition, Donald Reed’s father, Herman Reed, worked between 1941 and 1973 at The Boeing Company. Donald Reed claims his father was also exposed to asbestos during his employment, and that both he and his father transported asbestos home on their clothing.

Reed has filed suit against a total of 60 corporations, claiming his disease was wrongfully caused by the negligence of the defendants. According to Reed’s lawsuit, the defendants either knew or should have known about the dangers of asbestos exposure. The suit states his exposure was foreseeable and should have been anticipated by the defendants.

Among the sixty defendants is the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, which Reed believes conspired with other defendants to misrepresent and suppress information about the dangers of asbestos.

Reed claims the defendants have since attempted to hide secret documents that would prove they had previous knowledge of asbestos hazards. Reed also claims he would have taken the necessary precautions to prevent exposure if the information had not been suppressed.

In addition, he believes the documents the defendants have suppressed or destroyed have negatively affected his ability to claim a fair and adequate amount of compensation for his injuries. Reed’s lawsuit is seeking compensation of at least $350,000, as well as an additional sum for punitive damages.
