Animal Testing Cons

Animal testing cons is the most debated topic, when it comes to conservation of the animal life around us. Read on to find out some information about this much talked about issue of animal testing, from the following article.
Man is a very curious species and this curiosity has led to his evolution and development into what he is today. In science, being the backbone of all this development, there are millions of experiments which are carried out every day all over the world, for various types of studies. When these experiments have a human application to their results, there are animals that are used to check its effects. Therefore, the definition of animal testing is the experiments and research which is carried in vivo (inside) the animal's body to see the results in them. If the results are positive in the animals only then are they used for human application.

Throughout the world it is assumed that there are about 50 to 100 million animals used per year for these animal testing experiments. These range from types of fish to non-human primates (monkeys). Though there are many pros related to these experiments, there are as many animal testing cons which also exist due to them. Find this information from the animal testing statistics put together in the following paragraphs.

Animal Testing Pros and Cons

Animals like some invertebrates, mice, rats, birds, fish, frogs, and some animals which are not yet weaned, are used in the process of animal testing. Sometimes they are purpose bred for experiments and sometimes wild ones are used. Innumerable universities, farms, pharmaceutical companies, medical schools, defense establishments and scientific institutes use animal experimentation for research purposes so that they can test their inventions on them and record their results.

Until the animal shows the desired results, their work is not certified to be used on humans. Many animal welfare programs as well as animal rights organizations have questioned the legitimacy of it. There are many animal testing cons like animal cruelty, poor scientific practice, non-reliability of effects in humans and that animals have a right not to be used for experimentation, which are raised before people. Therefore, from the information mentioned below in the form of pros and cons, you can find out what's good and what's not!

Pros
  • Among the many animal testing pros which are used by many institutes, a few say that, it helps ensure safe production of certain products before human application.
  • Since, protection of human life is considered important, the risk factor with these product failures is diverted towards animals. Since, the risks of losing a human life are far bigger than losing an animal life, the two cannot be compared.
  • Only indispensable animals are used in research and they are treated in a humane manner while being used for experimentation.
Cons
  • Even though the above mentioned pros are taken into consideration, because animals are the only way of testing new invented products.
  • There are also debates about killing animals for the sake of testing products being completely unethical.
  • Many a time when the experiments fail, there is complete loss of animal life, and some scientists in renowned institutes use these animals very liberally.
  • Another animal testing cons is that it is very expensive to carry experiments on animals, therefore it should not be considered.
  • From the animal testing facts it is also assumed that, most of these testing animals die due to human errors occur either in the concentration of the drug or the amount. This again is considered as wastage of life.
With these animal testing cons, I am sure you must have found out why is it necessary and why not. These animals should be used in a limited amount for research. But when they are misused, the act of animal testing is not justified, so make sure you are not on the bad side of progress!
