Anger Management Techniques

Many of us out there are prone to getting angry and not being able to control our anger, or the things we say. For all those people, here are some essential techniques that will help you manage your anger.
Why do techniques for anger management become important? Doesn't everyone get angry at sometime or the other in their lives? I'm sure they do. These techniques for managing anger are not for those who are basically calm and lose their cool once in a while (Though they are just as effective for them as well). These techniques are for those who get angry at the drop of a hat. But why do they need anger management techniques? Isn't anger just another emotion? Nope. Anger is something that many people suffer from. The reason I say suffer is because it really is no less than a disease. An angry person is never pleasant to be around. Anger drives people away and makes people avoid you.

Reflect upon yourself for a minute. Are you someone who is prone to getting angry soon? Do the slightest of reasons make you lose your temper? Do any of these sentences apply to you - "There will be hell to pay now, so and so" (That's you, BTW) or "When so and so (Yup, You again!) gets angry, you better steer clear of him/her." Now ask yourself, do you really want to be that person? Because, yeah, I agree it gives you a high to imagine that people will never mess with you because they do not want to pay the price of your wrath, but that is the EXACT reason why, overtime, people will start to avoid you. Why would anyone bear with a person for too long if they lash out all their anger onto them? Or any small reason is enough to provoke them into a temper rant? Exactly. That is why it is important to not get angry. That, and the fact that anger is not good for your health. It can lead to heart diseases and hypertension (among others). That is why it is important to carry out certain anger management techniques and activities.

Anger Management Exercises

Here are some anger management activities that you can do to keep the anger monster inside you far, far away!

Create the Want
Create the want to change. Until and unless you're convinced that you want to change the way you react and stop getting angry as often, you will never be successful. No one can force you to stop getting angry. That is your decision and your journey. How do you decide to change? For all the reasons mentioned above! Why be that person whom people avoid, right? Think about someone you've lost because of this habit or the people you've hurt deeply, and you'll have your answer to, why change?

Breathe!
Here's how you get into it. Every time you feel like you're getting angry, just mentally shutdown. Literally clear your mind by doing some deep breathing exercises. Concentrate on your breathing and ignore the stimulus that is causing the feelings of anger. I don't say it'll be easy, but try. Include some calming techniques into your routine as well.

Focus Elsewhere
When you feel like the anger is creeping up on you, focus on something completely different. Try and physically get away from the situation. Or create a mental picture of a 'happy place', something that calms you, and drive all your energy there.

Count
This has known to work for many a people. When you start getting angry, start counting numbers or alphabets. But avoid counting in a descending order (10 to 1) as this seems to be paving the way for a showdown or confrontation. Instead choose any random numbers or even a favorite song or rhyme.

Exercise
Exercise daily. This helps to get the adrenaline rush out of your body and helps keep you calm. When you are in the heat of the moment however, even simple arm stretches or neck stretches help.

Body Language
Maintain the correct body language. Which means, when there is an anger stimulus, lean away from it and not towards it. Leaning towards it will only send a signal to your brain that you want a confrontation to happen.

Meditate
It has been proven that including some meditation techniques in your daily routine helps to make you a calmer person. It drives away the stress and anxiety, which are two of the main reasons why people need anger management techniques. Try doing yoga or meditation to aid in managing your anger.

These are some of the essential anger management tips that you can include into your routine and adapt from, every time you are about to get angry.

These techniques can only be successfully adopted if you are willing to make them a part of your life. As far as providing the solution goes, I have tried to do that as best as I can through this article; but how far you'll be able to adopt it, depends on you, really. So make a promise to yourself that you really want to succeed and go for it! All the best!
