Anger Issues

What happens when your anger begins to control your life? You hurt your loved ones, spoil your reputation and then feel guilty about it. So, address your anger issues and learn to control your anger before it controls your life.
Anger can be considered as one of the most natural human emotions. Anger is the emotional expression of displeasure towards an individual or an event. A little amount of anger is actually essential for our survival as it is one of our means to defend ourselves when attacked. However, anger becomes a serious issue when the person adopts violent methods to express his/her anger. Anger is not only harmful for those who have to bear the wrath of the concerned individual but it is also detrimental for the psychological well-being of the individual himself.

Where do Anger Issues Stem From

Just like every other emotion, anger also finds its roots deep into the person's childhood. An abusive, traumatic childhood makes a person emotionally vulnerable. Such individuals often develop a feeling of insecurity which accompanies them into their adulthood. Anger is often used as a shield against this feeling of insecurity. Being angry makes them feel powerful and superior to others. However, some people may develop anger issues in spite of having a perfectly normal childhood. In this case, recurrent annoying experiences or being surrounded by annoying people all the time may lead to anger issues. Oftentimes, a person cannot make his displeasure evident at an event or individual responsible for his anger, which eventually directs it towards innocent victims. Sometimes, anger may be a symptom of some underlying psychological disorder.

Symptoms

Every individual has his own way of expressing his anger. While some people may physically lash out at others, some may only sulk throughout the day. Display of colorful language is the most common way of expressing anger. Only a few people adopt healthy ways of expressing their anger, that is by asserting their point calmly yet sternly. Peculiar symptoms include yelling at people/objects for no apparent reason, being in grumpy mood all the time and verbally or physically abusing other people. The more dangerous symptoms result from suppressing anger. A person may try to be as calm and normal as possible, however in the process he often ends up frustrating others. Self victimization is another major symptom of suppressed anger towards others. Angry people either defend themselves all the time or get mad at others over petty reasons. Some people may unknowingly manipulate the behavior of people around them.

Anger issues in men are particularly traumatic for their family as men often resort to violent methods to express their anger. This creates a rift in their personal relationships with their loved ones. Their wives and children often feel insecure which may lead to psychological problems in their case. Angry men end up with a bad reputation at workplace as well as in society.

Women are known to be the most emotional and sentimental of the two sexes. They are known to express their emotions in a healthy manner. Anger issues in women are of different type as women rarely resort to physical methods of anger expression. A woman with anger issues may completely detach herself from the people around her. She may develop an increased feeling of insecurity and inferiority complex.

Anger issues in children can be a cause of worry amongst parents and teachers. Angry children are often aggressive and find it extremely difficult to mix with other kids. They usually throw tantrums or may also demonstrate physically abusive behavior towards their parents or siblings. Such children may often grow into angry adults, if their behavior is not curbed on time.

How to Deal with Anger

The first step towards dealing with anger is acknowledgment of the problem. Once, you accept that you have anger issues, the rest becomes easy. You may go for any of the anger management programs available. If you find losing your control more often than not, seek help from a psychiatrist. Finding the cause of your anger can be extremely helpful as avoiding it can help you control your anger. Find ways to deal with people who annoy you, if it is not possible to completely avoid them. Detach yourself from annoying situations. Learn to look kindly at other people and forgive their minor offenses. If you know you have a caustic tongue, which can hurt others, refrain from speaking anything in situations of conflict. If nothing is possible, simply breathe deeply and concentrate your mind on something else.

Anger issues can ruin the life of a person as well as those around him, if the problem goes unresolved for a long time. Hence, if you or your loved ones face similar problems do not hesitate to seek psychological help.
