Angels - Part Seven
And so the story grows bigger.
WHERE ARE MY WINGS? WHAT DID YOU TO THEM?!?" I screamed at Zane, going into hysterics.
"When we were in the forest five Trackers came after us, and Amber tried to cover your smell up by throwing dirt all over you, but you fought back. The only way to keep you still so that the Trackers wouldn't be able to smell your scent was to knock you out." Zane replied. Even though I was hysteric, he was trying to stay calm, but I knew it was a mask. Me losing my wings had affected him to, some way or another. "But before she could hide you, the Trackers found her. They knocked her out after she had taken two of them out, and then they started to attack you. They ripped your wings to tattered shreds, and then started to ... abuse you."
I knew by abuse that he meant rape. And he had let them.
"You. Let. Them." I replied. My voice had changed, and when I said these words, it sounded half wild animal. It was unnatural. I had never sounded like this before. "You let them do all that to me and didn't stop them!"
Zane looked at me, appalled that I had even said that.
"I tried to stop them, believe me. I didn't want any of them to hurt you. I never did. But they attacked me first, and left me lying there half dead with four bullet wounds and a concussion. I crawled over to you and held your hand, lying in my own blood. If it hadn't been for someone else, we wouldn't be here. We would all be dead." Zane replied.
I sat there, unsure of what else to say. I had just jumped to the conclusion that he had let them. I hadn't ever thought that he had been attacked, and lost. He was a god in my eyes, and gods never fall to someone like a Tracker. They just never do.
"I see that you are awake now, about time. We should be able to leave this place soon, doctors said about three or four days. The sooner the better." Amber said, walking into the room.
Zane nodded his head and looked into my eyes for a moment longer, before getting up and walking out of the room.
"You can sit." I replied to Amber. She must have taken this as an invitation to eat the food that the doctors had left by my bedside table too, because the moment she was in the seat Zane was just in, the plate of food was on her lap.
She just sat there eating my soup and bread while I watched her, hoping she would remember that it was my food and give me some. I was starving. But she obviously forgot this, or chose to ignore it, because she ate the whole plate in a matter of minutes. It was like she had inhaled it.
"So I'm guessing that you found out about your wings." Amber said. If she was trying to start up a conversation, this certainly wasn't the way to go.
I simply nodded my head, and she did so in return.
"You know, losing your wings has its ups. You can now sneak around anywhere and blend in with humans." She replied. I felt like punching her, but I didn't have the energy. So I decided to argue back. That, I could handle.
"Yeah? Well what about my powers? I was the last Angel that could wield all the elements. But apparently that doesn't matter anymore, because now I can blend in with humans. Isn't this what you wanted? Now you can go back to whatever it was that you would do before Zane and I came to you, and you won't have to give me a second thought." I replied. It came out a bit bitchier than I wanted, but oh well, she deserved it. After she tried to bury me in dirt and then knocked me out cold, I don't care how I come across to her.
"Wow. No need to be so bitchy. I tried to cover your smell. You smelt so strongly of Angel, and I knew that if we wanted to get out of there alive, your smell needed to be covered, and smothering you in dirt was the best way to do that. And even then, the amount of dirt I got on you before wasn't enough, because as soon as you were knocked out, they came from behind me and shot me in the left shoulder. And even though I was in agony, I fought them, and took down two of them to try to save you, but they shot me twice again, once in the stomach and the other in the leg. I tried to stop them even though the pain was almost unbearable.
Tears were streaming out of my eyes, and my blood was everywhere, I tried to crawl over to you, but they kicked me, knocking me out. And I laid there in my own blood, knowing that you would be safe because I saw Zane crawling over to you, and I knew if there was anyone that could save you, it would be him." She replied. I could tell that she felt something towards Zane, because she made him sound like a God, and the look in her eyes was enough to prove that.
That was why she treated me like shit. She liked Zane. And she didn't like the fact that he was coming onto me. But it didn't mean anything that he was coming onto me, not anymore. He let them remove my wings, and now I'm nothing but a mere human. Something that was unbearable to even think about. I just wanted to punch something, or someone. Anything.
But for the second time in my life, I knew I was too weak to even do that.
"Look, I know that you hate me, but Zane fought as hard as he could so that you would be able to keep your wings, but they were torn to shreds. If you had kept them they would've gotten infected, and you would've died. You had lost too much blood as it was, and this was the only way to save you." Amber said.
I knew this was her way of apologizing, and there was no way that she would actually say sorry to me, so I just nodded my head and turned to face the other side.
She must've realized that I wanted her out, because after a moment's hesitation, she left.
So much had happened since I had met Zane. I had fought with more Trackers than I had ever in my life, had my wings taken from me - and probably lost my powers too - and found this amassing guy that had saved my life a fair few times already and had spent a whole night cuddled up to him talking.
All of this in the span of roughly two weeks. At least I think it was two weeks, I couldn't be sure. I had been knocked out a lot, so I had lost track of the days, but two weeks sounds about right.
"Are you ok? I know that you are angry at me now, because of your wings, but I did try to stop them from taking them. I took out half a dozen staff before they shoved a needle in my arm and knocked me out too. Your wings were ruined, and there wasn't anything that they would've been able to do to salvage them. They tried to repair them, but because they had been shredded, there wasn't much that they could do. Tracker blood got on them, and Tracker blood on an open Angel wound can be lethal. You are lucky that they didn't get any of their blood anywhere else." Zane said. I hadn't realized that he had walked in; I was too wrapped up in my thoughts.
"I lost my wings and my powers, and you reckon that I am lucky? I am a human now! I was meant to be a Queen! I was meant to rule this god forsaken place, and now I can't because you let them take my wings!" I screamed at him. I know it was harsh, but he didn't know what it was like.
"I saved you. I crawled over to you and I dragged you to the nearest house and got them to take you to the hospital, and then I went back for Amber and did the same for her. And I did that with four bullets in me, still bleeding." Zane replied. He was trying to keep calm but his voice had gone hard and dangerous.
I just lay there, unable to think of anything else to say. I thought that someone had come across us and picked us up and taken us to the hospital, but Zane had dragged me to civilization while he was riddled with bullet wounds. He put me first, like he said he would. I couldn't believe I had been so selfish.
We just sat there for a while, staring at each other until Amber walked back in. She was carrying some food and some water and handed them to Zane and I.
"Did I miss something?" Amber asked staring at us both. As soon as this was out Zane and I broke eye contact and started to eat the food that Amber had given us.
"Ok, maybe not." Amber said, answering her own question. She must've felt the slight tension in the air, because she immediately changed the subject. "The food is crap, believe me. And the doc's said that you will be out very soon, so you should probably get some sleep."
I mumbled a reply and put the hardly touched food and water on the bedside table and rolled back over, slowly drifting into sleep.
