Angels - Parts Two to Four
And the plot thickens... :)
Part Two
We'd been walking for a solid four hours, and by now I was tired, sore and hungry. But no matter how I felt, I didn't want this guy to think that I was weak, because there is no way that I am going to let anyone think that about me. I am a lot of things, but weak is not one of them.
"I think we should stop for a bit." He said. It was like he was reading my mind.
"Sure. Whatever." I replied. I didn't want to make it sound like I really needed a break, but I think he could tell I needed one. I realized that I must look like crap, I haven't had a shower for almost a day, and I had been doing a lot of walking since then. A LOT of walking.
He sat on top of a rough looking rock. If this guy could sit on top of that rock and not get a sore arse, then I take my hat off to him, he was obviously used to living rough.
I sat myself down on the ground about a meter away from him. He passed me a water bottle from his backpack and I took it without a word.
"We should be there in about another two and a half hours walk. Once we are there we will stay there for about a night and head off again. I don't want to spend too long in one place, if people get word that there is an Angel there, we could be in for a lot of trouble." He said. I had taken a long gulp of water and passed him the bottle.
"What's there anyway? A palace? Are we going to be able to sleep in a proper bed and eat proper food?" I asked. The thought of hot food and a soft mattress was enough to make me want to run the rest of the way there.
"No. But someone I know there will help us. Hopefully." He replied taking a sip of the water and then putting it back into his backpack.
It was then that the nausea swept over me. The one that tole me that there was Trackers nearby.
He noticed that I had tensed up and started to look around, trying to see why I was tense. He looked back at me and his eyes went wide. He had obviously figured out what was wrong.
He bought his finger to his lips and was obviously telling me to 'shush' and not make a noise. I nodded my head to let him know that I understood what he was trying to tell me and he got up without making a noise and pointed at me and then at a bush nearby. I shook my head and bought my fist up and pretended to punch the air, trying to tell him that I wanted to fight. He walked over to me, grabbed me by my wrists and threw me at the bush and told me to not make a noise again. I glared in reply and he ran of, out of my sight.
I think he was thinking of fighting a group of Trackers by himself. Was he completely dumb? There was no way that he could take down some Trackers by himself, no one could.
I climbed the tree not really knowing what I was doing, just knowing that I had to help him. Even though he wouldn't tell me his name, I knew that he was trying to help me, and I had to help him. If he died, then I would have to go back to the solo life, and even though it had its pros, it was really lonely at times.
I climbed as far up the tree as I safely could and tried to see if I could spot him from here, but obviously he had walked up further than I had thought, so I jumped from the tree, hoping to land on a branch that was about five feet below me and three feet away. I jumped off the tree, but I must've miss-calculated, it must've been further than I thought, because I didn't land on the branch, but kept on falling. I hit what felt like every branch on the way down, but it didn't slow me down at all, just split my arms, legs and face everywhere that they could reach, and then crashed onto the ground, knocking the breath out of me.
I felt like I'd broken every bone in my body, and my leg was agonizing. I just sat there, tears stinging my eyes. I knew that if I didn't stop the pain in my leg soon, I was going to scream, and if I scream, the Trackers would find me. If they found me, I was in deep shit.
Today just wasn't my day.
I heard footsteps coming towards me. They sounded like they were running towards something, or from something. And I didn't want to be here when it came. I tried to get up, but just moving my leg was enough to make me scream in agony. There was no way that I could walk on my leg; there must be a break in it. I decided then and there that I was not going to go down without a fight. If a bunch of Trackers wanted me, then I was going to try to take down as many as I could.
I grabbed a nearby branch that looked sturdy enough to support my weight, and hauled myself off the ground, taking as much weight off my leg as possible. The footsteps were coming closer, and from what I could tell, I only had about 30 seconds before they would come across me, and I needed to find somewhere a little more hidden.
I spotted a bush nearby and stumbled over to it awkwardly, trying to not put any weight on my messed up leg and still get there as fast as I could.
I got there just as the Tracker did, and I ducked down, dropping my makeshift crutch and tried to stay as silently as I could. He stopped and looked directly at where I was hiding. I clamped my hand over my mouth, trying to hide the sound of my breathing. It must've worked, because after a moments more hesitation, The Tracker kept walking forward, murmuring under his breath.
I let out my breath and started to get up off the ground, taking my makeshift crutch from the pile of leaves I had dropped it into.
Just when I thought I had made it out alive, someone, or something, grabbed me from behind.
Part Three
Finally the mysterious guys name is revealed.
"Shhhhh!" He whispered in my ear. I recognized who it was straight away. It was that guy.
I whipped my head around and glared at him. He immediately dropped his hand and drew his finger to his lips, signaling for me to shut up.
I have to admit, when he was concentrating on something, he sure was sexy.
He got up and crouch / crawled to the next bush to see if the Tracker was really gone. Once he was satisfied that the Tracker had gone and wasn't going to loop back around and attack us, he crawled back to where I was sitting.
"Can you walk?" He asked me.
He had obviously noticed that I was in pain; he looked really concerned about it too. It was kind of sweet and funny at the same time.
"No. I think I have broken my leg or something. It hurts like shit." I replied.
He touched my leg and I screamed in agony as the pain soared through it.
"Ok. I think its best if I give you something for the pain, knock you out and carry you the rest of the way. There is no way we are going to make it to the city on that leg before the sun goes down." He replied, looking at the sky. The sun was close to setting, we only had an hour or two.
I knew he was right, but I didn't really like the thought of being knocked out and carried to a city I don't even know. But what other choice do I have?
"Ok. But please, don't decide to go all double cross on me and hand me over to the Trackers." I replied. My weak attempt at a joke.
He smiled a little at the corner of his mouth, and then reached into his pocket and threw some dust over me. The pain in my leg started to go away a little. He started to draw some more dust out but I touched his arm.
"What's wrong? Is the pain still there?" He asked. It sounded like he was desperate a little, desperate to make things better.
"No." I replied. "I want to know your name. I'm not going to go anywhere with you until you tell me your name."
"Zane. It's Zane." He threw some dust over me and I felt myself immediately becoming drowsy.
When I woke up I was in a strange room. I had been laid on a black leather couch. This couch was probably worth more money than I would ever see in my entire life.
"She's awake." A strange female voice said. She had a slight accent.
Before I could think about her accent anymore Zane came over to me.
"Sleeping beauty awakes for the second time this week." He said, smiling.
It took me a minute for me to comprehend what he had said.
"A WEEK?!?" I asked. I thought I had only been out for a few hours.
"Yeah, we had to keep you out for a while longer. We had to fix your leg. Two breaks, no wonder you couldn't walk on it." Zane replied. He reached out to pull one of my strands of hair out of my face, but stopped himself.
So he thought I was cute. AWESOME!
"I'll go and get you some food." The girl said. She had obviously seen what had happened, and the awkward moment was enough to drive her out of the room. He didn't say anything back to her, he just sat there and stared at me.
It was starting to turn into a bit of an awkward moment, so I decided to save the non-existent conversation, before anything else happened. "Who is that?"
"Oh." He replied. He got up from the couch and strode over to a chair and sat in it. "That's Amber, a friend of mine. She is going to help us find some more Angels."
More Angels? That was a bit dangerous. Looking after just one Angel was hard, but more? That was a death wish.
Before I could reply Amber walked back in carrying a tray with a bowl and a mug on it and placed it on my lap.
"Here. Eat up, you need your strength. We need to leave tomorrow morning." She said. She walked over to the window.
"Why tomorrow? Can't we hang around here a little longer?" I asked. Tomorrow sounded to close. I had only just woken up after they knocked me out for a couple of days, and I needed to recover.
"No. We are risking it here as it is. If we stay longer people will become suspicious, not that they already aren't. If we set out tomorrow morning, we should be safe, everyone will be asleep, and we should be able to make it out of here safely." Zane replied.
I knew there was no point in arguing, they had their minds set on leaving tomorrow morning, and there wasn't any point in fighting them, so I just nodded my head and started to eat my soup.
Part Four
The adventure begins...
They woke me up before the sun had even risen, so it was dark everywhere, which meant it was a bitch to get dressed.
They had given me some clothes to wear, some nice, tight but flexible pair of leather pants, some high boots and a leather t-shirt that hugged my curves really well, unfortunately, it meant my wings stood out. Usually I don't mind my wings being free, but when you are trying to sneak out of a city undetected and pretend to be like everyone else, wings were a big giveaway.
"We're going to have to risk it with the wings, unless you will let me cut them off .. ?" Amber said. I could tell that I was just a liability to her, and she couldn't care less about what happened to me. If it weren't for Zane, I don't think that se would've kept me.
"No." Zane growled. "She can just have her wings out, and if anyone comes, I can throw some invisibility dust at her."
When he growled like that, it made him sound sexy.
Amber didn't reply, she just walked to the table and grabbed a bag, chucking it at Zane, and then grabbed another and put it on.
"What's that?" I asked. Maybe they were jet packs or something, and we were just going to fly over to the next city. That sure would make things interesting.
"Weapons, food and water." Amber replied, glaring at me. Why the sudden bitchiness?
"Where's the map?" Zane asked her.
She looked at Zane and all traces of bitch disappeared. "My pocket."
"Ok. Just don't lose it, we will need that later." He replied.
Amber nodded and walked over to the door. "Ready?" Before either of us could respond she walked out the door, leaving us alone.
"Just do what she says, no matter what. And don't make a sound." Zane said, and then he left me too.
Not wanting to be left alone, I followed the out the door and to the unknown.
Leaving the city had been easy, everyone had been asleep. But as soon as we got out of the city and into the trees things got tricky. Because it was dark I couldn't see too well, and I kept tripping over tree roots and fallen tree branches. And the scratches were just the beginning, we weren't stopping for rests, and it didn't look like we were going to for a while, and that would be fine with me, if I hadn't just recovered from a broken leg.
But, life isn't easy. I would rather be walking non-stop then be caught by a bunch of Trackers. That would suck.
"Hey guys, couldn't I use my power over fire and light my way around then we wouldn't have to stop every thirty seconds so I can get up from the ground." I asked.
I admit, I didn't expect this plan to work, but surely they could compromise with me and let me get a torch or something?
"No. If you use fire, no matter how controlled it is, we will be spotted." Amber replied. She said it with ice in her voice, as if there was a hidden message in it, one that went something a lot like 'I dare you to try, give me a reason to knock you out again." Stupid cow.
"She's right. We don't know who else is in the forest, and we don't want to risk someone finding us." Zane replied.
I swear that I saw Amber smirk, but in this light, it was impossible to tell if she did.
I didn't reply, just simply trudged along after them, going out of my way to trip on every little thing I saw to piss Amber off. And boy, did it work.
"Can't we just drop this little brat somewhere?" She whispered to Zane when we had finally stopped for a break at around about noon. She sounded agitated, it was like I had run over her cat or something.
Zane glanced at me and I hastily pretended to go through one of the backpacks. He turned back to Amber and I waited until I was satisfied that they weren't looking and I turned back to them.
"No." He replied, shaking his head. "We can't just leave one of the last few known Angels alone in a forest. You know that she, out of all of them, is important. Especially in times like this. We can't afford to lose her, or leave her alone."
He sounded genuine to me, and by the way Amber stalked off, she thought so too.
Zane walked over to me, and I pretended to continue rummaging through the backpack.
"Did you hear that?" He asked me. Trying to keep up the act that I was looking for something in the bag, I grabbed one of the weird instruments in the bag. When I didn't look up he decided to crouch down in front of me and push my head up so he could be at eye level with me. I stared into his eyes, and lost any word that I had in my head, any smart ass reply that I had thought of, and for the first time in my life, was rendered speechless. When I didn't reply he nodded and let go of my face.
"You are important to us. To everyone. More important than you realize." He said before getting up and walking away.
I let out my breath while what he said span around in my head. You are important to us. To everyone.
He stopped and turned around.
"And that thing is a portable urinal. I would wash your hands." Zane replied, and then turned around to walk over to the bushes, after Amber, I assumed.
I dropped the urinal and wiped my hands on my pants, the words still reeling in my mind.
You are important to us.
