Angelina Jolie Calls on Thailand to Accept Refugees

Angelina Jolie is using her clout as an ambassador for the United Nations to try to persuade Thailand to accept refugees from nearby Myanmar.
Even with her rapidly expanding family, Angelina Jolie still finds the time to stay in the headlines around the globe. Angie's latest venture is to help the refugees leaving Myanmar who have been mistreated by the Thai military and sent back out to sea. Leveraging her public image and her position as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, Jolie is calling on Thailand to be a bit more hospitable to the refugees it encounters from Rohingya.

"Visiting Ban Mai Nai Soi and seeing how hospitable Thailand has been to 111,000 mostly Karen and Karenni refugees over the years, makes me hope that Thailand will be just as generous to the Rohingya refugees who are now arriving on their shores," Jolie said in a prepared statement issued by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

And as if this wasn't enough, Jolie is also nominated for an Academy award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Changeling. Jolie and husband Brad Pitt made the rounds at the early season awards shows and were always red carpet standouts. Brad was recently photographed posing with his zipper down - unintentionally, it seemed. But even that embarrassing photo hasn't done much to dampen the nearly impeccable public image of the couple.

While already perhaps the most active Hollywood couple in terms of promoting positive change and social activism around the country, the pair also has six children at home, including the two twins the conceived together most recently.
