Andy and Me

This is a children's short story about a little girl with a younger brother with Down Syndrome, and how the bond of siblings is very strong, especially when one is needing protection and unconditional love.
I can remember how I felt when my Mommy brought home my little brother; his name is Andrew, but I always call him ‘my Andy’. I asked her if we could take him back to the Hospital, because he was kind of being loud and crying and constantly taking mommy and daddy’s attention away from me. It wasn’t long though before he captured my attention and; O.k my love too. He smiles a lot and is always pretty happy these days.

You see Andy has something called Down Syndrome. I had no idea what that was but Mommy told me It just means that Andy is a very special boy. He may look a little bit different, but he keeps up with me and plays and walks and does everything I do. He can’t really say words yet, but daddy says it won’t be too long before he is talking up a storm. He makes me happy when I see him because his smile is always so big.

Sometimes I play blocks and build castles and towers and of course Andy is right there beside me, trying to knock them all over and running away with the blocks. I’m so happy not just to have a brother, but one that is so special in so many ways. He loves me even when I am not being nice or sharing the way I’m supposed to, I guess we won’t have to take Andy back to the hospital after all, I would definitely miss him!
