Anchorman Refusing to Speak
Vincent was an adored anchorman and had a bad reputation with the ladies. Always knowing that June was the one for him, Vince finally pops the question. Will she accept or will she leave him speechless for the first time ever on national T.V. This is a short romantic story that is cute, witty and very entertaining.
The Anchorman
Vincent stood in front of the vanity at the Four Seasons staring at his own reflection in the mirror, "Damn I am one good looking SOB," he voiced out loud. Wiping the sink off, Vince turned an ivory knob, washing away all the black hair. "June darling, do you know where I put my aftershave?"
June replied to him saying that the aftershave was still in his bag and she would bring it to him in a second, she was getting dressed. Perfect, Vincent thought flashing his bright whites in the mirror. She didn't even have a clue what he was about to do.
Vince wanted to ask June the night before, that was the whole reason behind the hotel room but then one thing led to another and, yeah. She was going to be so surprised. This was not like Vince at all; he had a bad reputation with the ladies but that all changed a couple of months ago when June had asked him to be monogamous. June knew it was not something in his nature but she said she wasn't able to go on being with him unless he changed. Vince understood where she was coming from; he was always all over the tabloids with a different chick on his arm every night, so of course he agreed. He deeply cared for her since the start and did not want to humiliate her any longer. Eventually, he fell in love with her fiery green eyes and her vibrant red; she was unlike anyone he has ever been with.
And here he was, preparing to pop the question. Well in his own way. June finished fighting with her panty hose and slipped on a pair of red heels. She was so not looking forward to her visit with grams; the night with Vince was extraordinary so much so that for a moment, she thought he was going to propose to her. He didn't though it was just wishful thinking on her part. Buttoning up her white silk blouse, June walked over and unzipped an overly expensive black suit case. She never could understand why someone would spend three hundred and eighty nine dollars on something so practical. Shaking her head, June dug around the front pocket of the bag until her fingers gasped something little.
She pulled out a ring box with white letters written across the top, Tiffany & CO. She opened the thing very carefully to only have her breath taken away after seeing what was inside, a 2.5 carat ring with additional carats of diamonds all the way around the thing. Overwhelmed, June's emotions sky rocketed to a high alert. Her eyes were turning red and beginning to itch, she was hot as shit and worst of all her hands were trembling so bad that she dropped the Tiffany Nova. Panicking, tears fell down her creamy freckled face. June bent down on all fours, searching the threads of the carpet for the ring, she had to find before Vince walked in and caught her.
A good couple of minutes had passed while June desperately searched for the ring not realizing that Vince was standing right behind her. Once she had the thing in her hands once more, June rose to her feet and turned around.
"Marry me," Vince said smoothly, like it was no big deal.
"What!"
"Marry me, I was going to ask last night but you know." His voice was husky and his lids were low. The first few buttons of his collar shirt were undone revealing some of his chest hair.
Looking Vince over, June thought he looked prime male. His chest was broad, his thick neck muscles quivered and his jaw was taunt. "How much was this?" She asked a little agitated that he still hasn't gotten the hint, June was practical, and she liked plain and affordable things, point blank.
Does it matter Vince started to say before he put the brakes on and backtracked that thought. "The ring I had costumed made so when finished, it was priced at forty seven thousand or so," he said waving his hand in the air. "It is a Tiffany Novo; it reminds me of you with such brilliant cushion and cut. I had it created with spirit, fire and style at mind. This dazzling ring was inspired by you. I give this to you representing our past and a glimpse of our future, so marry me."
"No." June said firmly with her arms crossed around her chest, still holding onto the engagement ring with a firm grip.
"And why not," Vince asked with an eyebrow raised, looking a little to amuse by Junes outburst.
"Because you disgust me," June elongated her arm holding the ring between her fore finger and thumb. "Here, I don't want it."
Vince threw his head back and laughed.
"What are you laughing at?" She asked him dumbfounded by the way he was acting, she just turned him down and handed him a back a 47,000$ ring. If she was him, she wouldn't be laughing at a damn thing.
"You, you are just too cute. Come here." Vince reached out for her; he was wearing a smile that could be spotted from space.
Without any questions asked, June stepped into his embrace. "I'm not going to marry you," she whispered up against his chest.
"Oh, yes you will," Vince said softly kissing the top of her forehead. He let go of June and stepped back, "If you don't, I will never speak again." Raising one hand up under oath he swore to it.
June chuckled at his ridiculous behavior, "Yes you will, you have to. You're an anchorman for Pete sakes."
Without another word said, Vince finished dressing, gave June a kiss and walked out the door.
Once at the station Vince didn't do anything any different from any other day. He strolled past the front desk, nodding to all the girls with his pink thick lips curling upward into a grin. Standing at the bottom of the staircase David waited patiently with the Washington Post in one hand and a twenty four ounce of Colombian coffee in the other, just the way Vince liked it black and bought at Wawa's for a dollar sixty nine.
"So how did last night go?" David asked smoothing over his charcoal Alfani suit.
Vince simply shrugged, preoccupied with his morning routine of checking over the sports page.
"That bad huh, I told you June was to fine of a woman to ever marry the likes of you."
Lifting his heavy lids from the replay of last night's Capitals game, Vince raised an eyebrow and thin his lips grimly. David got the hint by the let's not go there look Vince was burning into his blue eyes and quickly change the topic to the morning's overview for the upcoming broadcast.
Vince listened attentively while David quickly went through the upcoming news, man weren't they all in for a surprise. He let go of a horse laugh as he thought of the look on everyone's faces. Yeah, they were in for a treat. The whole news team as well as the state of Virginia has relied on Vincent La Brake for the past eight years and not once had he failed them. This was different though, he had to do what he had to do in order to get that hard headed woman of his to marry him. Vince knew she watched the show so he was hoping that his silence would get her attention and make her realize how serious he was about her.
Walking into a large gray and chrome opened room with a half dozen or so cubicles, Vince flashed his famous smile and waved to everyone one, another daily routine of his. Vince never spoke to anyone until the actual airing of the show, he was that dedicated to all the viewers as well as his fans. Now after the news had been all said and done with, that was a different story.
In the studio, Vince picked up his stack of papers of a desk and took his place in front of dozens of cameras, his coworkers and his bosses. Looking over his lines, Vincent heard Norman yell, "Take your places everybody." His arm was elongated out into the air, waving his forefinger in a circle motion. As people scurrying about him, Vince took a deep breath, preparing his self for his not so much of a speech for the day.
Next to him sat Kathy Baker, his co-anchor. "Are you alright?" She asked him in a hushed voice.
"Alright everyone let's take it from the top and-" The countdown begin, the lights darkened and Vince could hear the opening credits in the distance.
Five, four, three, two, one and. Nothing it was silent, Kathy looked over to Vince giving him a hard stare. The lights burned in his eyes, he could her whispers of his name being called but that wasn't the worst of it. Vincent sat there calm, cool and collective with one hand placed over another while sweat dripped down his tense neck. Vince fought against all his natural urges to prove his point, even though he was disappointing much of the city at the moment.
Kathy slid a note over to Vince while someone yelled to cut to a commercial. After reading it, Vince picked up a black ball point pen and replied while the entire news team rushed to his side, yelling all sorts of ill things in his ears. Kathy stood from her seat, "Someone find June Rolland's and get her little red head down here, right now." Her voice was loud and carried throughout the entire studio. All of a sudden people everywhere were on their phones trying to reach June Rolland's.
June was sitting on an old worn couch watching the news with her grams when it abruptly cut off to a commercial. What in the world? Her first instinct was to grab her cell and call Vince to make sure he was alright but as the news broadcast returned, June's eyes popped out over her head. The entire news team was in a disarray running about the studio, she heard her name being yelled in the background by several of people Vince worked under, and then her phone rang.
Vincent simply sat back in his chair with his feet up on the desk satisfied that his plan was working out perfectly. He closed his eyes while a buzz of chaotic voices fluttered around in his mind, until sweet thought of the night before with June drowned out everything else around him. Vince didn't know how long he sat like that for but he didn't reopen his big golden eyes until the room fell silent with a gasp of hushed tones.
When he opened his eyes before him stood the lovely June Rolland's with her hands on her hips, leaning to one side. "And just what do you think you are doing?"
Vince shrugged, turning his mouth into a twisted smile. God he wanted to take her right then, right there. He loved it when she was mad, her anger enhanced her beauty. The green in her eyes and the fire in her hair came alive for him when she was pissed off.
"Is this about this morning, Vince because I already said-"
Vincent stood up and leaped over the desk cutting her sentence off short. He pressed his lips to hers and heard someone in the background yell, "Air this shit." Out of his pocket Vince pulled out the Tiffany Nova. Once again the entire room fell silent as the last bit of air left their mouths.
He got down on one knee well aware the cameras were rolling. No way would she refuse him on national television but then again look how long he had humiliated her in front of the whole world. Vincent looked up to June with eyes filled with love and compassion. June's eyes matched the curls that flowed down her back, she was crying.
"June," Vince cleared his throat not liking the way his voice sounded, hoarse and dry. "You have stuck by me for two years now even though I have been nothing more other than a dirty SOB." She was about to cut him off but he raised his hand to stop her. "When you asked me to be exclusive with you, I agreed because of that. It was the right thing to do." Vince paused choosing what words to say next. "I was wrong June, all of this time I have done wrong to you and I plan on spending the rest of my life making it up. I love you more than anything, be my wife June. Make me the luckiest man alive and be my wife."
Vince began to cry as June slipped her hand free from his. She took two steps back and really got a good luck of the man she loved. A beautiful man, who was tough as nails, knelt down on the floor with tears in his eyes, crying for her. June had never seen Vince cry before; it was something so unreal to experience. She walked back over to him and rested her dainty hand on his broad shoulder.
"Get up, your crying on TV. And yes I will marry you, in one condition."
Vince stood and took June into his arms. He had a good feeling of what her request was going to be. He kissed her harder than before.
Leaning back to get distance form those fierce lips, June smiled and said, "You have to get a different ring, I am not wearing that thing. Seriously look at it Vince, the thing belongs in a museum or a palace somewhere."
Happier than he has ever been, Vince tilted his head back and laughed out loud filling the air with his joyous mood, God how did he love that girl.
