Chapter One.
The evening was beautiful. The diner was lit with twinkle lights and soft lit candles as the bride and groom danced to their first dance.
Ara and Charlie had the diner set up in such an elegant manner that if they kept the place looking like this they could easily change Jan's Diner into a Banquet Hall. It was an idea, but Freddie knew the newly married couple would never change Jan's Diner into anything other than what it was.
Freddie sat in the dark corner of the diner, watching as the couples danced while staring intently into each others' eyes. And that's where Freddie stayed for a good part of the evening.
She sighed, then heard the baby in her arms coo.
"You want to dance too?"
The baby gurgled looking up at her. Freddie gently swayed baby Chari left to right in her arms.
Chari is Georgia and Phoenix's three-month old who was gorgeous and took after both parents. What a perfect combination. Chari cooed again as if she could hear Freddie's thoughts.
Just as Freddie looked up and out into the crowd the baby's parents came back to claim her.
"Freddie, why don't you go out there and dance?" Georgia asked as she cuddled her baby girl.
"Naw, I don't dance," she replied as she looked over mother and baby with a bit of envy.
"It's getting pretty late anyway, I should get going."
"Aww come on Freddie, stay a bit longer," Georgia coaxed. "Phoenix will give you a ride home."
"I don't want to put him out," Freddie replied, reluctant to put anyone in any trouble to take her home.
She didn't live too far, anyway.
"It's no problem. Come on, let's dance," Georgia said as she passed Chari off to her daddy and grabbed Freddie's arm.
So they danced with the bride and groom to some fast paced music. Freddie let loose and to her surprise enjoyed herself so much that she didn't notice the hours go by. She laughed with mirth as she and the little crowd danced the funky chicken, the Village People's YMCA and a mix of disco songs from the 70's.
By the end of the night, Phoenix and Georgia both took Freddie home. They left the sleeping cherub Chari at the house with a few of Charlie's family members so they could drop her off.
"Did you enjoy yourself, Freddie?" Georgia asked.
"Of course. Thanks guys for giving me a lift. If you ever need a babysitter you can always call me up to Marsdale or if you're in town you can always drop Chari off."
"Thanks," Georgia smiled. "We may take you up on that one day. You're great with Chari."
"I love taking care of babies. I used to do it a lot when I lived in Marsdale."
"You're from Marsdale?"
"Yeah," she answered sheepishly. She never spoke of her life before moving into town. They only knew her as Freddie the diner girl. "I still have family there, I haven't gone back in a while. Not since before your wedding."
"Aww, we'll have to invite you over some time."
"That would be great," she answered.
"If you like you can come over next weekend, if you're not working. Phoenix is going away for a consultation and I'll get Ara to come out too if she's back from their honeymoon."
"I'd like that!"
"Great. It's a plan whether or not Ara came come down. I'll pick you up from the station."
After thanking the couple for their generosity, she walked into her basement apartment and got ready for bed.
Life here definitely was different from the perfect life she had back home in Marsdale.
Before Freddie closed her eyes to sleep a few tears trickled at the memories of what she left behind.
She would have had everything Georgia had right now. Would, being the operative word.
She squeezed her eyes shut and willed sleep to take over.
