An Assassin’s Offer
Should Camrey trust this person from her past…
The fighting ring was basically a cage; all around the cage there were people all holding their breath for Camrey. They didn’t know she was Camrey, she was just the fighter who had never lost. The atmosphere was thick with the excitement of the fight and as Camrey tensed they froze.
The other fighter who had been barley standing was jump–kicked into the electrified cage that the resident mage had set up. Bolts of lightning fizzed around his body and Camrey turned to the cheering crowd with a smile. Her manager came out and raised her hand as the winner.
"Who’s that?" asked a dark figure in a hood to the manager upstairs. His voice radiated danger and the manager had to stop himself edging away.
"That’s shadow."
"Shadow?" he asked amused.
"Yes, she’s our biggest revenue raiser."
"Really?"
"Always get the place packed for her fights, I would like to know who trained her."
"Hmm… I would like to meet her."
The manager considered refusing but considered it an unwise choice in the interest of self-preservation.
"I’ll have her sent up here, although I warn you, don’t mess with her."
The man let out an evil chuckle. "I wouldn’t do that." He said.
Camrey took a large swig of water as the other fighter was dragged past.
"Will he be all right?" she asked no one in particular.
"The lightning was more for show than anything else." Greg said. "A good spell if I may say so."
"Good,"
The manager’s maid/mistress ran down the stairs and Camrey looked towards her.
"Shadow, you’re wanted upstairs." She said.
"Why?" Camrey asked.
"The manager didn’t say." Camrey levered herself out of her chair and stretched her stiff muscles.
‘This had better be good." She walked up two sets of stairs to the manager’s private box rubbing her rib where the other fighter had whacked her with a steel pole before the fight. She had a feeling that her rib was cracked but didn’t want to say anything to the over worked healer until she was sure.
When she entered the box she span as the door closed behind her. The man who had been standing behind it stepped out of the shadows and she stepped back.
"What are you doing here?" Camrey asked him. "How did you find me." He didn’t answer just stepped two paces forward until she could feel his breath on her face.
"I’m not intimidated."
"No, I would be disappointed if you were." His hand brushed up her side and she shivered.
"What do you want?"
"Just to talk." He said trying to hide his surprise, she had grown up since she left. He had the urge to brush her lips with his but he didn’t.
"To talk." She sounded skeptic and he couldn’t blame her.
"And to offer a job." She pushed him away.
"Forget it, I won’t kill for you." She went to walk out but he caught her and slammed her against the wall. She winced as his body pressed against hers and her rib. He put one finger on it, she closed her eyes and sighed as it healed resting her head on his shoulder.
"It’s not that kind of job." He said stroking her head.
